About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. Private breakfast meetings and dinner events also catered for.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Excellent English breakfast. Good service and great place.
Food great. Bit noisy but... Service excellent - Thanks to all. House white wine super. We shall recommend and will undoubtedly come again. The apple and pear crumble was fantastic, Thank the chef please. The care and thought on the menu was apparent and appreciated. Mike
Lovely food and speedy service as usual!
Great food in an unusual setting
Mt Chinese guest was very impressed by the setting. We both found items on the menu that we enjoyed. The service was attentive. We booked a table at 14:00. The need to leave by 15:00 was very clear.
Another member of waiting staff needed please, service is very slow and in some cases slapdash
Delicious honest food. Attentive service Comfortable atmosphere
Everyone I introduce to Cafe Below loves the uniqueness and the location is really convenient
Top notch food, served by friendly staff. Bit noisy in the main restaurant, but food outweighed that.
A bit noisy, but that's unavoidable in such an environment. My Chinese guest loved it - location and food.
Fantastic location in the heart of the City, in an atmospheric medieval crypt, with wonderful food and attentive service. I love Cafe Below!
A lovely find! Quirky seating, good food. The lighting could be more atmospheric. Given the location it's a shame that it is quite so bright. Great place overall - make sure you book!
Lovely building, very quick service on a Friday lunch time but could have been a little more attentive when trying to order (we had to ask someone to take it) Lovely food
Always lovely food. I’d eat salad every day if it was always like this!
I have been eating here since 1990 and it’s a beautiful hidden corner of the city. My sole complaint is that for a restaurant that bakes its own bread and serves such wonderful fresh food, the eggs at breakfast were pale. Bring out the Burfords!
Did not answer phone when I tried to advise running a few minutes late. Didn't have courtesy to try call and confirm attendance. Arrived 15 mins late and already bumped us.... Oh, and you already asked for a review - so this is a repeat....
Lovely setting, amazing fresh food which is great value for money
The lamb Kofte (?) dish was not my favourite. Hence only 4 stars.
A great place for a healthy and tasty lunch in an iconic venue.
Great for lunch
We really enjoyed the unique venue that Café Below is. The food and service were both fantastic and we had a great time, thank you so much! We will definitely return.
Excellent food and venue - will definitely return!
Unique and entertaining setting. Lovely cafe breakfast food using quality produce. Delicious in-house bread.
Great as always - thanks see you soon!
