About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
The Cafe Below is a delightful hidden secret in the City of London
The food was good and so was the atmosphere, although because of the acoustics it does seem to become a bit noisy when it's full.
Just a bit noisy when all tables are occupied but nothing much you can do about that. I also love the size of your tea pots!!! Loving it, food quality is amazing and it is nice to see the chef pop by. Team is friendly, lovely and super efficient. Even came 2 days in a row. Also yummy desserts... which i had to skip on day 2...
Stunning architecture wonderful vaulted ceilings and beautiful stone walls - very atmospheric. Simply furnished, simple menu - just 4 starters and 4 main courses but well thought out. But this simplicity clearly allows the menu to remain well priced. Food was good quality for the price.
Café Below is my "go to" quick healthy dinner when I want to meet clients or colleagues near the office. Always something fresh and delicious on the menu with yummy puds when feeling like being a bit more indulgent.
Good atmosphere - friendly Staff - book if you can
The atmosphere was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. I met a friend and we were able to order, eat and get away in just over an hour, which was ideal.
Great location. Tasty food. Excellent value
I found the whole experience pleasant and charming.
Fine breakfast. Great venue. I especially like the Barbican style concrete arches in the crypt which perhaps you could make more of as it is a reminder of the complicated history of the building and its near demolition during the blitz.
Hidden Gem in the centre of the city - You will not be disappointed if you are Vegan or Veggie. Well worth a look.
It's a pleasure to leave this feedback because I've been coming to Café Below for years and never had anything other than delicious food. I'm hard pressed to think of better place in City. Thank you and well done. Please keep it up!
The souffle didn't taste of anything - but the salads were good. Lovely place. Would come again and will recommend it to people.
I have always had a great experience here and recommend it to people all the time. This time however my lunch companion (whom I was introducing to the restaurant) asked if he could possibly move tables (before my arrival) and was spoken to and treated very rudely. He was most upset which is a shame because based on that I dont think he will be returning which means you have lost a potential repeat customer.
Highly recommend, a great venue!
Great vegan food
An excellent lunch enjoyed by my guests from USA. Great food and great service. Thank you
A delightful lunch. Great service, great food and I had to have the crumble and custard again. Fabulous!
The Café Below is a fantastic place for lunch in the City. They have made the most of the interesting setting and food and service is always great!
Excellent food and good service. Interesting surroundings which unfortunately make for a rather noisy ambience and the tables are too close together - however the food and the value for money overcome these short-comings.
Straightforward dishes impeccably prepared, generous portions and tremendous value - a real rarity in central London.
Great food in an historic setting. The perfect place for breakfast and lunch.
Lovely vegan chilli ! Would be good to have a daily vegan dish if you don’t already :-)
I particularly like the various fruit crumble puddings, also the home-made lemonade. It's nice not to be expected always to drink wine.
