About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Another lovely lunch and good service. Thanks.
Great location, good food and excellent service - try it!
Extremely delicious food for vegetarians and meat eaters. Very attentive service.
The food is excellent and the service is efficicent yet very friendly and accommodating. The only downside is that it gets Very noisy! Those lovely stone vaults give a charming atmosphere, but, together with lovely ancient flagstones, are unforgiving! At least there is no "music"!
The food as always was excellent. I had a little trouble getting into to my seat given the proximity of a pillar and an adjacent table.
Surprised not to have a “full English “ option? Also, no ability to poach an egg?
Consistently excellent. Glad to see the outside section open again.
Amazing place! One of my favourites in all of London!
Unique place and great food!
Great value, great service. A hidden gem.
It was really fun for place to eat and meet as a group of creative writers from Birkbeck college reunited by our beloved tutor after several years. Some of us successful writers me a sculptor all pursuing some form of the arts.
Always a pleasure dining at the Cafe Below. Staff are always very friendly and efficient, the food is always good and it’s a lovely setting.
slightly lacking in ambience at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon (possibly something to do with the current renovations as I have seen it buzzing at other times). Great service; efficient but not overbearing. Cannot really comment on food or cost as we only had coffee and I didn't pay but menu looked good and I would return.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Cafe Below for years and everyone I take has usually never been before and thoroughly enjoys the experience. It was the same for our party of Seven on Wednesday. Thank you!
Lovely find, will be back.
food and service were both good
Such a nice differentiated place to eat vs all the chains in/around One New change. Historic and beautiful location, delicious fresh food with new menus, helpful and attentive staff.
Very nice food if you like pescetarian dishes
A hidden gem!
Excellent lunch once again! Been a few weeks since I have popped in and you reminded me you are one of top favourites in the City. Thank you again for all your hard work, delicious lunch and great service, V
Always a really enjoyable experience!
Food was lovely and great environment
Having booked a table I would have expected at least some of the MAIN courses available to us. When we arrived at 1:10pm we were told there were no MAIN courses left. Would advise that if customers take the trouble to book then keep at least that number of mains to serve. We ordered starters instead and decided against ordering anything else.
Lovely atmosphere, good food and impeccable service. I expected the venue to be a lot smaller than it was and pleasantly surprised, a good size. Thank you for a wonderful lunch!
