About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Always love dining here
I'm sad to say the servers were rude and stroppy. Used to love this place, am disappointed...
Well cooked, well presented and delicious food, as usual!
Staff were very attentive and thoughtful. I was impressed by the service.
Wonderful as ever.
All absolutely delish but could we have a GLUTEN FREE DESSERT PLEASE!!! Thank you... :)
just excellent - great food and a great venue.
Lovey food, lovely service. Thanks Cafe Below
We came here for breakfast. The cafe is quiet and felt like another world from the city above. The food was superb, especially the toast, even though the menu was limited. The atmosphere more than compensated for the limited choice of the menu. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would definitely come again if I have a chance.
I love Cafe Below. The food is always excellent and the service great. I am amazed that more people don’t go here as it is a wonderful place and in a fabulous location.
Really yummy and cool and quiet.
Although I'm not a vegetarian, I love vegetarian food and appreciate a restaurant that provides interesting options for those who don't want meat or fish. My friend and I both had the vegetarian casserole with brown rice - nutricious and delicious!
Generally, our table's food was nice but I had the prawn and avocado salad and was very disappointed by the prawns. Just small prawns straight from the packet. No seasoning or flavor and tiny. Will come back but not for the prawns. My friend said her Quiche salad was very good.
A lovely luncheon spent in a beautiful surround with delightful service.
A great place to dine.
Very fresh and amazing food. Been here before once and the food was even better this time. Really lovely atmosphere, pretty quiet so good for private chats too.
Excellent food, including the vegetarian options which I often order, despite not being a vegetarian. The service is very speedy which makes it handy for a lunchtime venue.
I visited for a business lunch, as i often do if in London. Service, food quality and value for money always consistently good. The Head chef even left the kitchen and came over to find out if everything was okay and thank us for our custom.
Great service, food and venue. Excellent for a team lunch with a difference
The spanish waiter was brilliant - very accommodating and fun, sorry I didn't get his name. Food and wine lovely. Only criticism was it was incredibly noisy
Good, interesting food in a unique setting and great location. Do try the homemade lemonade.
Excellent food as ever and lovely service.
Wonderful food. The sea beam and polenta was amazing.
The booking I made was not recognised by Café Below. I had beer poured over me by a waitress. The bill included the beer I drunk despite saying it would be deducted from the bill. Consequently we refused to pay for the service charge and the beer. I did not received an apology from the waitress responsible. The bill took 15 minutes to be delivered.
