About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Nice, peaceful place for a good quality lunch
Outstanding service, we had a time limit and everything was done with time to spare but the food and service were excellent and not rushed
I love this place. It’s a hidden gem - with beautiful ever changing menu, great staff and good value.
Something slightly different for a perfectly pleasant lunch. Rapid service
2nd visit will definitely be going again
Good food, nice setting and friendly service - a favourite of mine.
As my wife and I mentioned to the waiter who took great care of us, this is a fantastic place. The chicken pie with crushed potatoes and broccoli was absolutely perfect on a cold day and we just love this place!
Delicious bacon & eggs brekkie, good coffee and lovely setting with attentive staff - great start to a Monday morning. I'll be back...
Everything was pretty much perfect! Thank you.
An absolute gem! Took a friend for lunch who was over from Asia. I wanted to find a place that was a proper London experience but not either posh or a boring chain. We are both healthy, largely vegetarian eaters so the menu and quality was important. Cant believe I didn't know about Café Below, having passed the church and square so many times. The atmosphere is so calm and a great mix of a historic vs urban feel. The staff were really friendly and chilled, and the food was great - perfect for our style of eating. Great quality and taste. And all at a very reasonable cost. Being based at More London, this is a bit far for lunch but definitely worth the 20 min walk. I will be back soon! Thanks you :-)
sorry but the chairs were uncomfy, the tables too close together, i asked for crispy bacon it was wet and fatty, the toast was cold, the service was really slow & not too helpful - i asked for a larger table as the one offered was super cramped in - despite being more than 70% i was told no! sorry but I shan't return on this basis.
Rreally great food, fresh ingredients and good presentation. very attentive service too!
Cafe Below is my go to place when I am in the city for breakfast, lunch or coffee. Its a great venue, extremely sensibly priced and best off the food is fantastic and the staff are so welcoming.
4 stars for atmosphere as can be a bit chilly sometimes (but appreciate it's due to being in the crypt!) and 4 stars for value for money as slightly pricey....although very nice for a treaty lunch.
Food was fantastic and service was friendly and attentive. A great experience overall. Will definitely go back next time I am in London!
Nice atmosphere and food was good.
Lovely little hidden gem in the heart of the city! Feel good food (and prosecco!) and fast service. I think this place will soon be a favourite...
The food was very tasty and healthy (or so it seemed!) The room is very noisy and this made conversation difficult. Service was a little slow, though the food arrived quickly it was difficult to attract the waitress's attention.
Excellent all round, well done to all staff, I think you have it just right !
We made a booking online. We got a confirmation email the day before in which we confirmed we were planning to go to our booking. On the day of the booking we made a special journey in to London to get to the location in time for our booking. When we go there it was shut and no one was answering the phone. Not impressed.
Best lunch spot in the city, excellent service and good food for a quick lunch.
Lovely setting, great food and wonderful service
Little gem, hidden away. Did not know about it. Service was good, food was tasty, pricing fair and all round a lovely experience. Could easily recommend
Always love dining here
