About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Great place for lunch. You ought to open in the evenings with a different menu.
Really delicious lunch! Looking forward to the next time :)
Excellent lunch location for a complicated meeting. Really appreciate the environment and service. And the exceptionally tasty meal. Thank you
Entertained a client from Brussels who always finds interesting venues when I visit - this was perfect. A unique setting, great food, service and, incredibly well priced...
Cafe Below was a welcome respite from the bustle of the city above. The food was excellent, fresh, seasonal and gorgeously presented. Friendly and attentive waitstaff, even to us tourists. (Although a tourist myself, I was grateful to see the cafe playing host to locals). The staff were particularly kind to our two children, ages 6 and 8, whom we often drag to the restaurants where my husband and I would like to eat. If your kids are picky or not well-behaved in restaurants this may not be the place for you. But if they don’t require a kids menu, and can sit and enjoy the atmosphere, bring them along! Our kids enjoyed the cauliflower and cheese soufflé and the banana bread.
A good find, in the city! I like that the menu changes everyday.
Really lovely food in a great location. Bridges the gap in the City between coffee/takeaway lunch places and expensive restaurants.
A very enjoyable place to go for lunch.
Great, friendly service and lots of good veggie lunch options.
Great venue, great lunch as usual
Quick service, great food
Amazing food and service and architecture!
Fantastic venue for lunch with a touch of all too rare individuality
I always love going to Café Below - amazing food, excellent value for money. I always recommend my colleague to go!
Menu a little bit confusing in regard to the salads.
My friend and I found this a few months ago, what a lovely place, and quick enough to be able to go to for lunch. Thank you.
A real treasure. Great food, served in the Crypt of historic St Mary Le Bow, on Cheapside. Really lovely food, with plenty to eat. I had the Gruyere and leek quiche, which was full of creamy cheese, and served with a large salad. I had banana bread for dessert: a generous portion that I could not finsh, but could take home. Moist & delicious.
Always enjoy coming here. Great food, great service, good value and no waiting around. Can't ask for much else...
Great for a quick bite or a more lengthly lunch in a unique setting.
Perfect Service, couldn't have done more for us. Food was lovely and quirky venue. Will definitely visit again.
I came with three other people and we were all very pleased with the food and atmosphere. The waitresses were a bit surly - prehaps not enough of them for a busy lunch time. It was a shame that at 12.30pm the pork belly was already off the menu, but we were all very impressed and very likely to return.
Always tasty food, served well, friendly staff. Would recommend to friends....
I love eating here and come back time and again. Unique venue, delicious food at a very good price.
My career path has taken me away from the area for a couple of years, I am delighted on my return to find the Cafe below still serving quality food at good value prices.
