About Cafe Below
In the atmospheric, mediaeval crypt of St Mary le Bow Church, the Cafe Below is a City institution. A quiet oasis from the hectic world above, serving a short menu of British dishes, with the occasional curry, the cafe has an ever changing seasonal menu. Being beneath the Bow Bells, naturally we are dedicated to all things London, so we source as locally as possible; our coffee is roasted in Hackney and our beer brewed in the East End. For breakfast, we are the perfect place for a moment of quiet before the day begins or a small or large business meeting, all with Homemade rye toast, River Farm smoked salmon, Brioche French toast and our own granola.
Jay Rayner hailed the cafe as being the "kind of restaurant any hectic city needs"; a quality driven, friendly place where you can meet mates, clients or colleagues, all in the unique setting of a Christopher Wren crypt!
Always lovely food. I’d eat salad every day if it was always like this!
I have been eating here since 1990 and it’s a beautiful hidden corner of the city. My sole complaint is that for a restaurant that bakes its own bread and serves such wonderful fresh food, the eggs at breakfast were pale. Bring out the Burfords!
Did not answer phone when I tried to advise running a few minutes late. Didn't have courtesy to try call and confirm attendance. Arrived 15 mins late and already bumped us.... Oh, and you already asked for a review - so this is a repeat....
Lovely setting, amazing fresh food which is great value for money
The lamb Kofte (?) dish was not my favourite. Hence only 4 stars.
A great place for a healthy and tasty lunch in an iconic venue.
Great for lunch
We really enjoyed the unique venue that Café Below is. The food and service were both fantastic and we had a great time, thank you so much! We will definitely return.
Excellent food and venue - will definitely return!
Unique and entertaining setting. Lovely cafe breakfast food using quality produce. Delicious in-house bread.
Great as always - thanks see you soon!
My two friends were visiting for the first time and were very impressed; such a good lunch venue in such a convenient place for meeting people from different places in town
I'm a fairly regular visitor to Cafe Below. The welcome is always warm, the food and service is always consistentand of a very good quality. Charming lunchtime venue.
The Cafe Below is a delightful hidden secret in the City of London
The food was good and so was the atmosphere, although because of the acoustics it does seem to become a bit noisy when it's full.
Just a bit noisy when all tables are occupied but nothing much you can do about that. I also love the size of your tea pots!!! Loving it, food quality is amazing and it is nice to see the chef pop by. Team is friendly, lovely and super efficient. Even came 2 days in a row. Also yummy desserts... which i had to skip on day 2...
Stunning architecture wonderful vaulted ceilings and beautiful stone walls - very atmospheric. Simply furnished, simple menu - just 4 starters and 4 main courses but well thought out. But this simplicity clearly allows the menu to remain well priced. Food was good quality for the price.
Café Below is my "go to" quick healthy dinner when I want to meet clients or colleagues near the office. Always something fresh and delicious on the menu with yummy puds when feeling like being a bit more indulgent.
Good atmosphere - friendly Staff - book if you can
The atmosphere was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. I met a friend and we were able to order, eat and get away in just over an hour, which was ideal.
Great location. Tasty food. Excellent value
I found the whole experience pleasant and charming.
Fine breakfast. Great venue. I especially like the Barbican style concrete arches in the crypt which perhaps you could make more of as it is a reminder of the complicated history of the building and its near demolition during the blitz.
Hidden Gem in the centre of the city - You will not be disappointed if you are Vegan or Veggie. Well worth a look.
