Just some background to this story; I have suffered from anxiety on and off four the past nearly 4 years now. After speaking to my GP on the matter and alongside government regulations I have taken the decision to not wear a face covering because of the anxiety it causes both myself and others around me. I had to explain this to two separate covid compliance officers in the hotel lobby prior to my dinner reservation. Anyway, while maintaining social distancing in and around the restaurant, I sat down in a very cold, blue corner of the restaurant. Most of the restaurant has a very warm feeling with ambient lighting but for some reason this section of the restaurant is more like a breakfast room. We ordered a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc off the menu and were served the wrong bottle, a vegan ECO friendly bottle of white wine, which we didn’t realise was €5 more expensive until we received our bill. Our meals arrived out probably 6 or 7 minutes after ordering which I found very surprising but I was happy as I was hungry. My burger was disgusting. Very very disappointing. I am not hard to please, any dirty burger joint in Dublin would throw together a nicer burger than I was served here. It was 100% a frozen patty similar to a Big Al’s bbq 6 pack. And the “signature potato cubes” were as if they were sitting under a hot lamp at a convenience store deli for the day. My fork wouldn't even sit into them to pick them up. I find it very difficult to complain about anything when I’m out, especially when our server is so pleasant but the waitress noticed I wasn’t eating and asked if my meal was ok. I told her how it was and she very kindly offered me to take a look at the menu and reorder. In the meantime, she notified the duty manager of the issue with the burger, I could see the interaction across the restaurant. A couple of minutes later, the duty manager returns and recalls my refusal to wear a face covering in the hotel lobby. I explain my situation and he states that “for the protection of his staff and customers, everybody must wear a face covering, and if I am refusing to, then he is going to have to ask me to leave the hotel”. He failed to mention anything about the disgusting meal I was just served in his restaurant or offer any sort of apology. Instead, he resorted to threatening me in front of my girlfriend who by the way was wearing her face covering around the hotel as requested. Let me just explain that I had not come within even 3 metres of anybody else in that hotel or restaurant and the only people who had a problem with my lack of face covering are him and his covid compliance officer. The regulations, not law, clearly state that they should only be worn if the wearer doesn’t suffer physical/mental conditions preventing them wearing one or if the wearing of a covering would cause anxiety to the wearer. Anyway, the waitress in the end was very accommodating, offering me another meal on the house which I refused as I felt so ill after how the manager had spoken to me. My girlfriend couldn’t finish her meal for the same reason. We left the restaurant and returned to our room for the evening feeling very ill treated and a little bit sick after our experience in Blake’s Restaurant.

Really nice restaurant and reasonably priced. Wine a bit on the high side. The hotel is remote so it is not like a downtown location where you have lots of dining options. So it is a good that the hotel restaurant is at a high standard. The Covid 19 protocols really pleased me and I felt safe. You have to book ahead. I didn't get a confirmation email but the booking was made. The tables were well spaced out. The tables on either side of us were empty for most of the evening. Great and attentive staff. The young lady who served us breakfast was good chat. I think it is a great hotel.

Had a beautiful dinner in Blake’s despite it being Christmas time and with Covid restrictions. We had a “package “ dinner menu and while normally this is not as comprehensive as an à la carte sélection, this was a very well balanced menu. Nice choice, very well presented, very well prepared and excellent quality - all three courses. They only lost a star for wine selection as would have licked, a saint emilion or médoc, not a great French selection, but pleased to see the Orvieto Classico make a welcome return to their Italian selection! Service was attentive and pleasant. Very enjoyable and a pleasant surprise.

A most enjoyable stay and meal at Blakes. Will definitely stay again and avail of the unrivalled accommodation, food, drinks and most of all service and attention to detail
