About Black Knight Restaurant at Lumley Castle Hotel
The elegant setting and superb food on offer in our award winning Black Knight Restaurant make it a popular choice for diners from far and wide. Subtle lighting, lavish furnishings, unobtrusive yet attentive service makes the Black Knight Restaurant truly memorable. Our menu offers classical dishes with an original twist. Diners can choose from our A la Carte menu and enjoy an extensive selection of fine wines to complement your meal.
Lovely food and nice friendly staff. Woul recommend the steak, cooked to perfection.
Always enjoy our stay. The staff are always so nice. One complaint, no heating until six pm, so quite a cool first hour. The evening meal was delicious apart from a mushy aurbergene accompaniment to the lamb. I would have preferred a minted pea purée, or anything that would have complemented the lamb instead if detracting from it.
Lovely dining area...very friendly staff . Polite and kept a discreet eye out to clear plates exc. Hope to visit again.
Well, the food was quality, although our first choice of sweet wasn’t available, the second choice was nice. The price has been hiked up from £19.95 for 3 courses and coffee or tea with condiments, to £22.95 for 3 courses and an additional £2.95 for coffee or tea with condiments, £5.90 price hike is quite a rise for the same lunch.
Very disappointed with the afternoon tea. Asa special occasion I had booked for my family who live away. The sandwiches were salmon paste and should be smoked salmon for the price. Only had fruit scones which 3 people don’t like. Usually there would be at least 2 varieties of scones each. No strawberries for the scones and I didn’t think the cakes were particularly nice. Unfortunately we won’t be back for afternoon tea.
Great setting and efficient and welcoming service
I Booked to stay in the Hotel with my partner for dinner, bed and breakfast and paid the full amount on arrival. Hotel and breakfast were very nice but evening meal was a disaster. Only one vegetarian option which I had to ask to confirm. The sauce was overpowering and unpleasant and made the pastry soggy. There was very little goat's cheese. My partner had the chicken dish which was very mediocre and had POPCORN on the chicken??? I could not eat my meal and complained. I was brought a bill with only one meal charged for and the BOTTLE of wine. I explained that I had already paid on arrival. I was told that it would be sorted when I checked out. When I checked out I was not given a discount and was charged £21 for the bottle of wine we had. Never again!!!
The setting is fantastic, atmospheric and dramatic. The staff were very attentive and patient, but the food was second to none. Highly recommended and cooked to perfection. This will be a great night to remember and we would love to come back - hopefully very soon. A big thank you to everyone and thank you for making my partners birthday and special day to remember.
Everything we wished for given the special nature of the celebration dinner. Every detail of the booking had been followed through as per our instructions and the service was warm and friendly, particularly the Italian lady who looked after us so well and couldn't do enough to make the evening a memorable one.
Food was delicious, the strawberry souffle was amazing. We ended up returning a second night. Staff were friendly and welcoming.
I was expecting a high quality dining experience but it was very average. There was nothing to make a fuss about at the time but the service fell short of what i was expecting and the food was ok but definitely lacked the wow factor. Average food, average service.
Food very good but three of us had same meal cooked medium rare, medium and well done, medium and medium rare were mixed up and we had to swap plates. The leek was impossible to cut even with a steak knife!
The three of us thought the evening grills were outstanding all of us having sampled the rump steak and pork cutlet. We all loved the scallop and crabmeat lasagne starter. Breakfasts were excellent with a wide range of cold buffet dishes and freshly cooked hot meals.
we will come back for a weekend sometime in the future
Staff very friendly and helpful food for Sunday lunch was very good and well presented and plenty of it . Wine list good and not overcharged per bottle as with some restaurants. Overall very satisfied
Service was very poor, we were left way too between sitting down, ordering, service and between courses, we were not offer the wine menu at all, we were not asked if we wanted tea or coffee.
Lumley castle is a beautiful venue and afternoon tea is well worth the price given the cost of other venues offering the same. I have given a 4*rating on food and drink, not because the food was not delicious but the fact there is not a choice of teas, and it not being served in China teapots or China cups. A small insignificant issue but I feel by putting these in place the whole experience would be a little more refined.
The food was disappointing. Bland and tasteless. The only good thing was the fruit scone. The cakes served were not of a good enough standard and the service was disjointed and slow. The tea arrived well before any food and we had to ask for a further pot of tea as the first one had gone cold. Altogether a very disappointing experience and as it was a birthday treat for my friends it left us feeling flat and dissatisfied.
The staff here are absolutely excellent and the food is fantastic.
Afternoon tea was lovely really enjoyed
For "us normal eaters" the menu was excellent - However despite notifiying the restuarant weeks in advance that two in our party were vegans with nut allergies - there was no special meal selection as we had been lead to believe - Therefore their food and selection/value of food was very poor, so the unfortunate drop in star rating. Come on Lumley Castle ... veganism is on the increase, especially amongst the under thirty year olds.
Visited for afternoon tea. Food was okay although there wasn’t very much for the price you pay. It was very hard to get the attention of a waiter/ waitress, people were having to get up and go and knock on the kitchen door to find someone. Poor value for money compared to other venues close by.
As always it is a great place to eat in terms of the atmosphere and ambience. The food was good and presented attractively and there was no attempt to hurry us. Bar service seemed indifferent although the drinks once ordered came promptly. We sat there after lunch having told the restaurant staff we would have coffee, but none came so we left. Overall, I would describe the staff as efficient, but it lacked warmness.
Excellent service and delicious meals. Sufficient space between tables for privacy and no intrusion from surrounding conversations, a rare delight in restaurants today.
Food quality and service were good, although staff seemed stretched and a little stressed at times. Food choice from the menu was limited. Value for Money was poor. We had a 3 course meal for two (selecting mid-price range options), 2 pre-dinner drinks each and a bottle of wine with the meal at the lowest price range. The bill total was £132; very expensive for what we had. A single G&T at between £8-9 is somewhat excessive in my view.
