About Black Iron at Winstanley House
CLASSICAL COOKING TRADITIONS WITH THE BEST OF BRITISH INGREDIENTS
Black Iron at Winstanley House is a contemporary British restaurant and steakhouse in the heart of Leicester. Serving a combination of quality ingredients including seven different meats, tenderly cooked over charcoal in our traditional cast iron oven, Black Iron fuses the tantalising flavours of classical cooking traditions with a modern restaurant setting.
Our team of experienced chefs prepare simple, exquisite dishes with locally sourced seasonal ingredients, creating a glorious dining experience. Cooking over fire is a primitive technique that lets our top quality ingredients speak for themselves, leaving you with a newfound appreciation for British cuisine.
Sunday lunch was OK but two of the key things mentioned on the menu that, to be honest, are what make a great roast dinner - Yorkshire puddings and crackling - were both incredibly disappointing. The crackling just wasn't, and the Yorkshire puddings were tiny and flabby. So, certainly not a bad meal, but I've cooked better at home...and I'm not a chef! This place has fantastic potential but, if it is to be realised, the kitchen needs to improve dramatically.
Supply tea ready to go and not a pot of hot water and add your tea bags at the table. The water had a strong musty smell to it and we sent it back for coffee instead. The fruit scones were not cooked on the inside so were also sent back, together with the ones folks had at the table adjacent to ours. Just not the afternoon tea delight we were hoping for.
Fabulous service from the moment we arrived
I have been for lunch once and brunch twice now. Same problems time after time. I will now only visit the bar, the restaurant is terrible.
I booked the afternoon team (sandwiches and cakes) for my daughter's birthday and was really disappointed with the amount of food we got for £22 per head. It was definitely not worth the £66 I paid for three people.
The food was amazing and loved all the breakfast cocktails too. Service was fantastic.
Best meal we have had in a while. Highly recommend.
We were located in the second dining room and were the only people in the room so it was away from the main dining room and as such the service was lacking (out of sight out of mind). This effected the entire atmosphere for the evening . Looking forward to it but disappointed.
The only criticism I have is to do with the car park. It doesn’t look like it’s been finished off very well when the house and restaurant are so beautiful. it’s full of muddy pot holes and could do with some TLC
excellent food and staff were very friendly and polite
We advised before hand and on the day that we didn’t like smoked salmon, you just removed them ..... never asked if we would like anything else in its place ! I did mention this to the waitress and she said nothing. Bought in mince pies and ginger loaf ! Disappointing to say the least. The other things were gorgeous and service was excellent. Beautiful place but let down. Sorry.
Breakfast is lovely - the sharing breakfast is a great idea.
The Creme Brulee was amazing
Need an in house violinist to set the mood
Absolutely wonderful in terms of setting, food and service.
We were. disappointed that we had booked afternoon tea and you had none of the more common teas ie, no earl grey, Darjeeling or assam and that your staff, while very pleasant weren't particularly well informed about the products you were offering. When we arrived we got the impression that we weren't expected and none of you staff actually knew what was happening
Fabulous Evening with fabulous food served by a really knowledgeable waiter. Really enjoyed the dining room all decorated for Christmas.
A very enjoyable experience looking forward to going back
Hi meal was really nice and tasty, but would like to state that the sides ie potatoes or veg should be included in the set menu price and that more gravy should be included and not charged extra for. Deserts and starter were good value too.
Not enough staff not in uniform had to ask for extra sandwich’s 3 little one for two people not good enough, 3 bits of small single bread for 2 of us!!! Had to wait 30 mins for table, had to wait 19 mins to pay Wasn’t the best place, service let you down To young staff didn’t know what they was doing
Amazing food and service. Highly recommended
Always a great experience, with friendly and helpful staff, and beautiful buildings and setting within the park
The room we were in was very echoey. The food arrived at stages over about 20 mins so some of the sides arrived when we were almost finished with the main. I had heard really great things about Winstanley House and was looking forward to it but the experience I had was very disappointing.

I booked a surprise meal for my wife as it was our 29th wedding anniversary. We arrived slightly late due to traffic there no problems with us being late. Lovely food lovely setting my wife and I loved it we will definitely be back although it was a 37 mile drive.
