About Black Barn Bistro
Black Barn Bistro is the perfect place to spend an hour or two at absorbing the atmosphere of Wine Country. It is in the heart of the vineyard surrounded by vines - a table on the large generous veranda lets you look right out across the region.
In warmer weather a courtyard covered by a canopy of grapes is also a perfect place to enjoy lunch and a glass of wine. The lunch menu is light, fresh and delicious. There is an emphasis on freshly grown Hawke's Bay produce, the selection changes with the seasons.
During our opening hours we welcome walk-ins for coffee, drinks or our bar menu. This is available infront of our open fire or within our cocktail and wine bar. We recommend booking for our main a la carte dining menu
The bistro is available for private functions, evening and during the day, it is also the perfect venue for a very limited number of weddings.
A great place for a special evening.
Lovely dining experience. Excellent service & food.
The venue was lovely, the service great but the food was a bit average - nothing special given the prices.
Lovely meal. Have you thought of doing platters to share? Prices a bit high for size of meals. but still worth the visit.
Brilliant service can’t fault, good food. Will definitely recommend restaurant to our guests. Thank you for a good day received.
What we appreciate is the consistency of quality of food, service and atmosphere. The atmosphere across the whole site adds to the enjoyment. From the Kitchen Shop, to the tasting area to the restaurant itself, everyone is friendly and welcoming. Very tasty food to suit all preferences and a good range of wines by the glass or bottle. The service makes the whole experience. Thank you.
Disappointed with the meals, octopus was underwhelming, the goat croquets over priced for what they are and the lamb was cold and the cauliflower undercooked which seems strange given it was meant to be “12 hour roasted”
Great waitress and very helpful .
Really liked the chicken the previous times we were there, strange how it has been taken off the menu. May come back again if it’s back on the menu but otherwise it’s a no from us all.
Lovely evening and the slow roast cauliflower was fantastic.
Our waitress was great today. She was very friendly and able to have laugh with us. Great knowledge as well.
We were at the restaurant two night in a row. The first night, Friday, we were part of a tour - the restaurant was very busy (definitely not socially distanced!) and felt pretty harried. The staff member attending to us was abrupt with some of the other people on the tour. The second night, Saturday, we were on our own - the place was less crowded and we had a lovely experience. The menu is a bit limited (4-5 options for mains), but the food was top-notch. Our server was attentive and lovely to interact with. It's a gorgeous venue.
Returning customer First class food and service Pleasant ambience
Lovely experince and beautiful day glancing over Hawkes Bay. Food and wine delicious.
Excellent food and service. One of Hawke’s Bay’s best!
Great food and attention to detail from the staff. Highly recommended.
Wonderful lunch in a great setting. Service and food excellent. Will be back again
Everything about our lunch was excellent, thank you.
Another enjoyable evening at Black Barn Bistro. Will be back soon!
Thought the food and service was fantastic
We visited Black Barn for lunch and it was very special. The wine and food was delicious. The John Dory on leek risotto was particularly exceptionall! The kitchen shop is also worth a visit and we brought some yummy things to enjoy over the weekend. We’ll definitely be back next time we visit
I had a group of 15 ladies for my 60th birthday. We had a lovely afternoon. The service and food was impeccable and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks Team Black Barn!
Hugely disappointing We went to blackbarn just before the last lockdown and it was incredible. I had to pipi pasta, was also there last week for cocktail hour and had the cheese platter which was also great. We had friends say they went last week and they were unimpressed I was hoping it was a one off. Unfortunately not. The new menu was not exciting - we were trying to find what looked nice not torn between options. Entrees ok, not amazing but natural oysters you can’t really get it wrong. Mains- the pork was just about tough, it’s pairing did not match and crackling I’m pretty confident was deep fried. We left over half of the meal on the plate. My husband who will eat literally everything didn’t even like it. Ragu - quote from husband ‘it tastes like a pasta heat meal’ was dry and lacked flavour, again a fair amount was left on the plate. Fries - not sure fries should be on an ala carte menu unless there is something special about them, they were basically McDonald’s. Wines - we got a bottle each, which is quite standard when planning to have a big night. The bubbles I had was ok would not have again and left half a bottle (which never happens) Steves red was also just ok. Atmosphere- was cold, I was in my coat On all night and again husband runs on heat put his jacket on halfway through the night. I mentioned that it was freezing to the server and nothing done. Service was pretty good - although not asked how our meal was when both plates still had a fair amount of food on. When we went to leave us and another customer were literally yelling out to so that we could pay as we couldn’t find anyone (we and them were last of the night). Overall Find the chef and menu that you had before the last lockdown it was amazing Perhaps a bit of an overhaul of the wine list (which a weird thing to write for a winery) Keep up the happy hour I would do the above as soon as possible as havelock is small, in current environment restaurants are relying on kiwis, we were warned before going and now know why. It was not a $300 night at all. I’m leaving this feedback as if you are not told I appreciate you are unable to remedy. I am not a person who generally leaves feedback. It’s 5am and I still can not believe how disappointing our night was.
