About Big Sur Beer & Barbecue
Injecting a dynamic dose of Californian living into the city’s dining scene, Big Sur is a new all-day dining destinationdelivering its own take on ‘cali beer & barbecue’
Californian BBQ cuisine, with dishes from the south with hints of Latino flare. To match with your meal, Big Sur has a list of local and imported brews, including 14 taps of locally brewed draft beers by Hong Kong’s Young Masters Brewery.
I have to hand it to Big Sur management - they read these reviews and take them to heart! In my first review, I had expressed my grief on the shrimp and grits. Management emailed me directly to invite me back to try the 'new and improved' shrimp and grits. It did not disappoint! (more shrimp, more flavour - via leeks...and the price stayed the same) This time, my husband tried the burger (super juicy meat, perfectly cooked) and fries (nice and crispy). I went with the kale salad with the added Santa Maria style tri tip (super soft beef). The honey butter croutons added a nice splash of flavour. As it was a super hot day, I felt the jalapeno/cucumber/pineapple/apple/tequila cocktail was warranted. Very refreshing. The husband went with a nice big beer. All in all, I can't thank management enough for actually listening to their customers and making changes where warranted. Will we be back? Hell yeah!!!
You’re not fooling us Big Sur - many of the items were light on protein and heavy on the cheaper stuff - for example you should be ashamed to serve that sad version of shrimp and grits. , ditto for that calamari dish. Or at least manage expectations by lowering the prices! The juice “cocktails” had barely any alcohol in them - another disappointment. We loved the outside dining and didn’t mind the self service. Rather comical. Your friendly staff made it fun. My husband and I live in the neighbourhood and hope we can justify coming back...can you convince us?
Great meal and fantastic range of beers
Starters were great, but the main was disappointing. Tri tip and ribs were very dry and the tri tip was very chewy.
Service was good and staff were attentive. Food was a bit disappointing. Salads were tasty and the chef was excellent in catering for our vegan party however the sweet potato fries (which were actually wedges) were undercooked - checked by two of our group but the chef thought it was fine. The beef ribs were dry and not very meaty.
New restaurant still getting its bearings down. Food taste is great, service and wine could use a big improvement. For a restaurant that is supposed to be from California, there were only 2 Californian wines which were subpar to say the least. We ordered two bottles of Central Coast red since the restaurant is called Big Sur. The wine was served ice cold and was barely drinkable even after 30 minutes of being open. We were a big party of 12 and tried to communicate with the restaurant regularly prior to dinner as this was a big birthday. The manager was inexperienced and didn't seem to know his own menu. There were several calls needed as he kept having to "ask the chef". In a time when the restaurant business is so competitive and several restaurant groups are not only providing quality food, but also the service to match, Big Sur has some catching up to do.
It was a cold night and the front door was opened. We asked the manager to close the door and he said the owner told him not to. But it was really cold inside and we couldn't enjoy ourselves as we felt so cold. So we left without ordering food. We told the manager our reason for leaving but he didn't seem to care.
Great food. Even better service!
First of all, the beer selection is excellent! Big sur is for sure a great place for a beer and a snack, the outside area has a great feel and the heaters keep you warm in this cold HK weather. Service was great from beginning to end. All but one of the dishes was absolutley delicious and cooked to perfection. We found the duck a little chewy and under cooked and thought the fat needed to be rendered more. We told the waitress who apologised and offered a dessert on the house! The scallops were incredible, the lentils were the talk of the table along with the ceviche. Will definitely be back.
Waitress service v good and knowledgeable Bar service was painfully slow with only one barman. Need to empower / train stuff to help out eg pour beers. Hopefully the bar ‘issue’ is a teething one just associated with the soft opening.
Limited menu items with above average prices.
