About Big Easy Durban by Ernie Els
Earning his nickname ‘Big Easy’ as much for his effortless golf swing as for his big heart and philanthropic efforts, Ernie Els is synonymous with all-round excellence; pursuing the best in sports and leisure, while always staying true to his love of family and country.
“Having travelled the world, I have developed a good feeling for what I look for in a restaurant – great hospitality in a fun, relaxed environment in which to enjoy the end of a long day – spending time with friends over a great bottle of wine and a meal,” says Els. “The ethos behind Big Easy Durban Restaurant is to achieve that.”
“We are excited to be part of one of the world’s iconic hotel brands through this partnership with Hilton and Durban offers the perfect launching-pad, with its laid-back vibe and idyllic weather. It’s a great fit.”
Not a great experience at all...steaks were tough and in our opinion overpriced given the quality...considering the quality of Steak Houses in Durban this was really poor. Attention to detail also not there...my wife and I share a bottle of Red wine...but were given two differently shaped wine glasses! This might be acceptable at Spur but not in a supposed Top Class establishment! Louis
Good food and quiet relaxed atmosphere. Good food and interesting menu. Very expensive drinks menu.
My wife and I both had steak, which we like very rare. We were not disappointed as the steak was cooked perfectly. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient and took the time to chat with us.
The food and ambiance are great. The drinks are very overpriced.
Awful experience and extremely pricey. The restaurant was out of all our first choice main options. The portions were miniscule. Food was bland and boring. Great ambience but average service.
We had a 5 course new year's eve dinner with as we understand including drink's package however what was served in terms of beverage was a welcome drink same drink with 1st course and a green very sweet cocktail with the 2nd course trout! One would have expected a well balance pairing of suitable wines with the dishes. Overall quite sub-par. Also no effort what so ever had been made to decorate the restaurang for the occasion. The restaurant appears quite worn with the concrete floors lacking paint in patches.
Food was tasty and well presented Please try the Opera slice it is divine
Everything was excellent!
The service was appalling. Waiter was never on hand to take our orders. Took them more than one hour to get our starters. There was a long strand of hair in the side of chips. Was so fed up by this time that we did not even bother to show the manager , just sowed it to waiter & asked him to remove from table. Wall paper in private sector was all torn & tattered. Poor maintenance for a five star hotel. We left the restaurant feeling tired & frustrated(as everything was a looong wait). Terrible experience
celebrated our 20th anniversary. excellent service and food. a great venue.
I was not impressed with the service - which was to my opinion, worse that dining at a franchise restaurant. I specifically chose the venue for our Christmas Lunch and was disappointed with the slow, almost non existing service. The music was loud and we could barely have a decent conversation among the table.
Initially I was surprised by the lobby-like setup and atmosphere thinking we had come to the wrong venue. We decided to stay after I confirmed with the waiter that this was indeed the correct venue.I had asked for my steak to be medium but it came super well done! I asked for chips and was given vegetables - only got some chips after I queried that. My partner received pork ribs which was definitely not a full size portion. As we were celebrating a special anniversary we did not want to complain but I certainly will not dine there again. I was most disappointed especially at the quality. The waiter we had was attentive as we were seated right next to the till section. I will certainly not recommend this to anybody. I feel that the write up on the Hilton Hotel website is misleading too.
Absolutely love Big Easy, each time I go there I am never disappointed and the service is always amazing!!
Great atmosphere, Great Food and Value for money.
A complete disappointment, I don’t mind paying big prices for good food but this was terrible . A bunny chow that was a roll / the lamb shank was like a stew . My lamb wrap looked like a kiddies pizza and the hamburger was completely tasteless! Awful experience
Food was sublime, however I was disappointed I didn't get the duck but what I had in substitute was sublime, ambiance on point, drinks o.m.g. Fun sure was had.
The service was excellent, the staff friendly and very helpful. Both my wife and I enjoyed our starters and mains. We did not have to wait long for our food to arrive from the time we ordered. Would be going back soon for another great evening.
It was a beautiful atmosphere, our family enjoyed the stay and great service
The atmosphere was perfect, the service was perfect, and the food was awesome! Definitely recommend the Braai platter for two and the lamb shank bunny!
I must admit the prices were not on par with the food. The sauce we ordered came after our meal was almost finished...the steak was so dry and overcooked. I definitely wont be coming back or recommending anyone else. I was very disappointed as it was my 22nd wedding anniversary and we did not enjoy our meal which I thought would be spectacular seeing that it was in the Hilton.
Terribly overpriced wine and the food is not good at all.
Fine Dining at it's best!
We were served by the wonderful Simon, who treated us like royalty. From start to finish, our wine pairing lunch was a simply delightful experience. I highly recommend Big Easy Durban for a taste of elegant indulgence.
The dishes were excellent except for the venison. It had been a bit on the blue side so to speak and lacked dimension. I would have maybe seared it a bit longer and possibly pepper crusted it which would have added the required dimension and complemented the champagne perfectly. The trout was a clear cut winner with a decent portion size and should have been the main I would say. Hats off to the chef with the unique dishes overall. Events like these are welcomed as it allows one to depict their talents and the spirit of Africa.
The booking process was not easy at all, responses took long and I often needed to follow up for feedback. It’s actually the worst booking service I’ve come across. Nonetheless, I decided to go ahead with the booking even with that bad service. On the day the table wasn’t ready and of course I was not surprised given my booking experience. The food was lovely, thumps up for that. A major change is required on speedy responses when booking, after all it sets the tone of how the service will be on the day of the booking.
