About Bertie's restaurant @ Ruthin Castle Hotel & Spa
The AA rosette awarded "Bertie's" restaurant at 4 star Ruthin Castle Hotel & Spa
Lovely surroundings. Excellent service
Surroundings were fabulous but the poor choice of depressing music killed the atmosphere. Service was very slow. A stompy man showed us to our table then whisked off. No menus given. No drinks order taken. 15 mins later he returned. He gave the menus but then walked off again. After 30mins we were eventually asked whether we would like a drink. I had to ask for water twice and felt that the waiter was trying to pressure me into purchasing a very overpriced bottle of wine. Starters were cold and the extra supplement for the scallops were not worth it. I had duck as main and I couldn't even cut it!! The portions are minute so if you are hungry you will still feel hungry after leaving. Pudding was probably the best part but they tried to charge me £17 for the pudding when it clearly stars in my package 3 course meal. After getting the charge removed I waited for someone to take the payment but no-one came. They were all in the kitchen nattering away so had to charge to the room.
I was a disappointed by the afternoon tea served. The sandwiches were lovely however, the cakes were shop bought and possibly frozen, not homemade as you would expect for an afternoon tea. The surroundings are lovely, if a little worn. For the price I’m afraid I wouldn’t recommend going to friends or family.
Eat there two nights running as staying in the hotel. First night was a comedy of errors ie haven’t got the wine you want, haven’t got any chips, there’s being a computer error and your order hasn’t gone to the kitchen ! Having said that the food was well presented and tasty. The second night however the evening started the same.. run out of brown bread ! As the menu was very limited I had to have the same meal. What a difference! Portion of starter was at least half the size, the haloumi was so over cooked it was solid ! Then came the guinea fowl instead of the breast I had the night before I was given a piece that measured 3cm x3cm square. I measured it, my husbands was slightly bigger but both were completely overcooked. This coupled with the fact there was only one waiter for the whole restaurant meant our sides arrived as we had finished the meal. It was my Husbands Birthday weekend and this restaurant ruined it !!!
We enjoyed a lovely 3course Sunday lunch in a nice relaxed atmosphere, it was great to win this competition
The food was absolutely spot on and the waiting staff very attentive
Very slow service in restaurant, 55 minutes for starters after orders placed and to receive our wine, failed to restock wine in fridge after first bottle ordered so had to have a different brand. Waitresses asking us for orders that had already been given to waiters, disorganised really. When starters did arrive, they were pleasantly good and well presented, and the main dishes were ok (despite a side order missing too!)
The service was efficient however the restaurant only had 14 covers when we were there..we felt the interiors could be more in keeping with main part of hotel with pictures on far wall as was plain. Also where we were sat there was a chunk out of the wall. Restaurant would benefit from candles and softer music playing. The main meals were beautiful, presented wonderfully and a taste sensation. My mother who had the shin of beef said she would have eaten it straight away again and the pork Bon bons I had were gorgeous. Puddings were slightly disappointing as we stated on the night with the brownie having too many components and would of benefitting from a more simplistic dish.
We enjoyed three nights at this hotel and it is generally well organised, But on Saturday evening the hotel was trying to cope with two other events in addition to the hotel guests. Our dinner was booked at 8.30pm, it was almost 9.0pm before we saw the menu and the main course came a t 10 pm, there were eight of us in similar circumstances, of which one couple gave up at 10.10 and left the dining room not having eaten. lots of apologies but that was of little benefit. The Hotel is great and the views from the bedroom magnificent.
We were celebrating my Dad’s 85th Birthday. All the staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. The rooms are clean and well furnished. We will definitely be back for the Medieval Banquet.
You had ran out of steak and pork, and had no sticky toffee pudding left
Nice place, nice tea, just lacked the ‘wow’ factor. Castle a bit worn in places, and crockery a little boring.
Beautiful venue. Afternoon tea was delicious, plenty of cakes. We were well looked after. Highly recommend
We found the menu very limited, perhaps some type of salad would be nice. Same menu both nights I struggled to find something as I don’t eat much meat. Bread dry and stale bread rolls might be better Staff nice and friendly. ,
Halloumi starter was fantastic! Steak was a little cold and could have done with some more veg.
Lovely food - perhaps you could add a few more vegetables to the pork loin option.
Lovely food and friendly helpful staff
Food was delicious. Thank you
I travelled from Cardiff especially to dine at the castle for a special occasion. The food was extremely overpriced, I was served a very small portion of lamb with one small potato and one baby carrot, a dish which was at least half the size of a decent starter! Alongside a starter and a couple of drinks, my bill was close to £100 for 2 people, certainly not value for money. I had to order food from another place on the way home. The visit has left me feeling more than disappointed and out of pocket.
We had a lovely stay at the Ruthin Hotel and Spa and we enjoyed our afternoon tea. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming
Recently had afternoon tea elsewhere. It offered a much greater selection and higher quality food (cakes yesterday lacked freshness), 2 hours of entertainment, cloth napkins and a glass of prosecco in less grand but more pleasant surroundings. All at a price of £29:90 for 2.
Beautiful food, in a beautiful setting! Couldn't fault it
Food was tasty, but we weren't offered bread with the soup course.Service was fine a wait between courses which was fine for us as were happy to sit and chat.
