About Bertie's restaurant @ Ruthin Castle Hotel & Spa
The AA rosette awarded "Bertie's" restaurant at 4 star Ruthin Castle Hotel & Spa
My husband & I would not recommend the Berties Prosecco afternoon tea at Ruthin Castle to anyone...in fact we would deter anyone from booking. It does not warrant any stars, but it appears that is not an option within your questionnaire . This was a gift from our daughter, therefore we wish to remain anonymous in fear she may see our review...however we feel upset she wasted her money on such rubbish.! No personnel at reception on arrival...therefore had to search the reception rooms to find staff. Lacked christmas atmosphere. The sandwiches were unappetizing, dry & tasteless. No garnish whatsoever & who serves fish on white bread ?? The scone was dry with the poorest quality "jam". A variety of stale dry cakes ! The prosecco, tea & coffee were acceptable. We voiced our disappointment & concern to the waitress at the time , and on leaving, to reception staff member. A truly abysmal experience. We look forward to an explanation/feed back.
Lovely setting, but overall very disappointing
On our first evening the service was terrible, we waited ages for our drinks order to be taken and our friends went to the bar to get their drinks. When the waiter came to the table he was quite abrupt in his comments "you didn't need to go to the bar, I would have got your drinks" he stated that there was a conference party in the adjoining room and that it would cause the service to be slower. This is not acceptable, more staff should be taken on to cover this. Our meal on the second night was much better as the conference party did not eat in. The quality of the evening food was excellent. The breakfast quality and quantity was also very good, the only let down was on the morning we left.....when we came in EVERY table still had not been cleared from the previous person and we had to wait for a table to be set up. Even during our time of eating no tables were cleared and anybody coming in after us also had the same problem. It's a shame to have to make a complaint after staying in such a lovely place but you really do need to address these comments for future customers.
Food was exceptional, service at dinner was great, very quick. Breakfast was a good.
Having been a couple of years ago, we were disappointed to see that a few things were being let go. The ladies loo was awful with the carpet almost totally worn away in the doorway. Us ladies tend to judge a place by the loos and they were dreadful. The glasses were dirty (lipstick and water marks), the plates scratched, the crockery mismatched (but not in a good way). The turkey seemed as if it were over the counter slices reheated. No 'trimmings' with the turkey despite the descriptio we had no pigs in blankets and no stuffing. There was dirt splattered up the wall behind out table which my 14 and 15 year old sons pointed out!. Paint was chipping off here and there and towards the end of the meal the ladies were all feeling a bit too cold (advice to ladies, wear something warm). Simply not 4 star. Having said all that it was cheaper than we expected at just £19.95 (£24.99 on the website). The veloute was stunning, the roast potatoes delicious and the earl grey creme brulee also amazing. The Christmas atmosphere was lovely. The venue is in danger of just slipping away from where it once was. We would rather have paid more and seen the venue better looked after. PLEASE just put things right and we'll be straight back. We'll leave it a long while and try you again.
We loved the ambience and decor of Bertie’s The quality of food and presentation was very good The beef dish looked lovely but think a request for preference of cooking ( rare, -well done) should be asked on ordering We had to return a beef for further cooking and others had finished by the time it was returned A lighter dessert option would be good too Breakfast plates are cold meaning a very lukewarm breakfast though very good quality Sadly no mushrooms Loved our stay
Had a wonderful time would recommend this hotel and restaurant to anyone 👍staff have been brilliant especially Laura from reception x
We had lovely food. The service was not good as when we wanted to go we could not find anyone!
Myself and my husband had a lovely time away for our anniversary food and service was very good and we would definitely like to stay here again and would recommend it to anyone the ambience of the place the history it was lovely. X
Food was very tasty and a reasonable amount of choice.
Having read some bad reviews about the Castle in general we were a little concerned... but the room was great; the service was great; and the food and wine were great! Yes the decor was a little tired', but it is a large castle... complete with peacocks!!! Despite being busy, the restaurant altered our booking time when we requested it without any problems whatsoever. We'll be going back!
That pork belly was no doubt the nicest meal i have EVER had. Talk about awesome. Your chef needs to be knighted! Brilliant staff, a cracking stay!
lovely hotel.but service was so slow.over a hours wait for food after asking where i afternoon tea was twice, coffee had gone cold by the time we got our food ,but they gave us a complementary drink, and also more coffee to help..
Lovely food but the portions were a little small. The staff were very friendly and efficient. We also found the wine a little expensive.
Lovely afternoon tea, would go back again
The food was lovely but the portions were a little small. The staff were very nice and efficient.
There is no doubt that the food was the high point of our stay in Ruthin Castle. It was nicely presented and very tasty indeed, someone in the kitchen knows what they are doing. It is such a pity that the Hotel looks so tired and run-down, Maybe we just had a poor example of the rooms on offer because it was a special Telegraph deal.
We enjoyed our afternoon tea at Ruthin Castle. The quality of the food was very good. However, I would like to make a couple of points. I had expected to be seated at a tea table and not on sofas at a coffee table. I found this a little uncomfortable. We had to wait a while for our food and when it came, it looked very attractive. When I booked a few days earlier, I was asked if anyone had any special dietary requirements to which I replied that one of our number had a cheese allergy. We were asked this again yesterday and a few minutes later, the food was brought to our table on two cake stands. My sister in law's 'cheesiness' sandwiches were on one. There were four of these. On the other there were eight finger sandwiches to go between three of us - in other words, not even three each. I would have expected four each. This was the only savoury element available. The cakes were delicious but I would have expected more in the savoury line and although there was a festive theme in the cakes, there was none in the sandwiches. Although we enjoyed the tea, which was a celebration tea for my birthday, I feel that more thought needs to be given to the content. There are plenty of savoury options for afternoon teas.
Waited too long for dinner an hour before we got meal. Not enough on the plate! Having to pay extra for veg and potatoes unacceptable .
We were looking forward to special meal for a special occasion and we were hugely dissapointed. The main course beef, was nearly raw and we were not asked how well we wanted it cooked (like steak) so we assumed it would be cooked properly. Also dissapointing was that it was accompanied by only one carrot and one potatoe croquette. So we decided not to order a sweet and save any more dissapointment.
Something of a chain of poor service. We tried several times to book a voucher night stay. Each time we left contact details and never heard back: all contact was made at our instigation. We were finally given a room and booked fro dinner. On arriving to the empty restaurant we had to wait for a long time and in the end went to search for staff. We were subsequently put in a corner of the empty restaurant with staff calling to each other, presumably unaware elf our presence, across the restaurant. Food quality was fine, although menu choices were limited. The experience at breakfast was very poor. Most serving dishes were empty and we waited in vain for 30 minutes for the to be replenished while the egg sever had som much vinegar that it was rendered inedible. We left amidst amounting complaints from all diners and understood that there had been no chef resent at the 8 am opening. We raised these issues at check out and were told that we would be contacted by the manager. No contact has been made. While this was a gift voucher stay we did pay for dinner and the whole experience - zero contact despite numerous messages and emails - will result in no further visits and we will certainly not consider the hotel for any business or family wedding events in the future. We understand that things can go wrong and staff can be sick but zero effort to explain such things and make the shortest contact when the faults have constantly been brought to the attention of the hotel is inexcusable. Never again.
Food was okay pretty average. Staff very subdued and flat.
This was bought for me for a wedding present which my hubby declined to come to so I brought my daughter. We had a beautiful afternoon tea in the bar area with lashings of tea and wonderful food. Best afternoon tea we have had, thanks so much. The gent waiting on us was lovely and made us feel so relaxed and at ease. We had a little look around as well as it was are first visit, and saw the banqueting hall, which I have heard is amazing also. Will certainly try and get back again. You work in such a beautiful environment!
Staff were lovely and friendly very efficient. Food was excellent.
Never been before and didn't know what to expect but when we arrived it blew us away! Gorgeous castle and lots of history and beautiful grounds and rooms inside. We had afternoon tea but will be going back for Sunday dinner. It looked lovely! Thank you
