With Parisian and New York influences, Balfes is an all-day dining brasserie and uptown bar in the heart of Dublin 2’s Creative Quarter. Located on Balfe Street, where Grafton Street and the Creative Quarter meet, Balfes features a 20 seater outdoor terrace, a zinc-covered bar and open kitchen and is open from 8am until late Monday to Friday and from 10am until late Saturday and Sunday.
The menu offers healthy breakfasts, leisurely lunches and dinner using the best of Irish seafood and quality meat, with all produce expertly sourced by our experienced chefs. Strong on Irish artisan ingredients including farmhouse cheese and house smoked salt, Balfes also has its own coffee blend, home-baked pastries, muffins and cakes, homemade preserves and chutneys and cold pressed juice, making it the perfect space for breakfast meetings with tempting treats.
Grilled steak, prawns and whole fish are roasted on a charcoal grill using grass-fed Irish beef, dry aged for 32 days, while fresh oysters, ceviche, seaweed cured Gravlax and Castletownbere crab make up the seafood offering. Fresh local produce goes into creating Balfes’ salads, weekend brunches, juices and cocktails.
Balfes caters for specific dietary requirements and offers plenty of gluten-free choices across the menu including gluten free omelettes, fish and chips, pancakes and offerings from the charcoal grill including the burger which can be served in a gluten free wrap. The menu also offers pilaf rice, a vegan rice option, and dairy free rice pudding.
Formerly Pitt Street, Balfe Street was renamed in honour of internationally celebrated composer, Michael William Balfe, who was born and spent his youth in a house on No. 10 Pitt Street. The musical tradition continues today, rebooted for the 21st century. Complimentary all-day WIFI makes Balfes the perfect place to work or meet.
Would order something different next time, but a nice setting and good service.
Great buzz and very relaxing
I had a lovely afternoon yesterday in Blafes. My Mum, Sister it was her birthday and myself had lunch it was from start to finish very nice with lovely food, ambience and the staff could not do enough for us. I definitely will go back many thanks Michèle
Lovely brunch! Fantastic atmosphere. Food was absolutely delish and staff were super helpful and friendly. Definitely would recommend for a brunch treat!
Good food and attentive staff
Table too small
Had table reserved. Had to wait when we arrived. Seemed to be confusion regarding our booking with a number of staff involved going back and forth, seemingly looking for a table for us. We were hassled to order when we took our seat by at least 3 staff. However, once we ordered we were pretty much ignored. Had to call staff on a number of occasions for service. Very very slow. Food was nice but not value for money. Service needs to be improved, perhaps more staff required?
Great location and decor, food is nice. We were seated late and at times was hard to track down the staff, even though it was only moderately busy. Would recommend for coffees and bites.
Whilst I always enjoy coming to Balfes and have been several times. I always find the service to be on the slow side and some of the staff are a little inattentive. I asked several times for more water and it was slow to arrive and staff needed reminders. I find this frustrating and it has happened every time I have been to Balfes.
The food was good but we were left waiting a long time to order even though the restaurant was quite empty. Almost an hour after finishing our food we hadn’t received the bill but when we went up to pay we were made to feel as though we were rushing.
Rated atmosphere 3/5 as the restaurant was very empty being a weekday night in January. Otherwise everything was excellent!
Really enjoyed " the special" thanks Will be back to try it again 👍
We dined there on Wednesday 8th. Meal was lovely. It was a birthday present, and service was good but there workmen alongside our table dragging ladders and working at a height and guenerally very noisy which was not very conjusive to eating our meal. For that reason I thought Management wuld not allow that. The girl serving us asked would we like another table but we declined because at that stage we were almost finished. The table was the one just outside the toilets. So very disappointing. Norah & John Horgan
Myself and 2 girlfriends meet for lunch over Christmas. The service was not good. We had to wait on chips long after the fish/burgers arrived. Several requests for salt or a second glass of wine were ignored.
Service was very poor . Drinks were all over the place. Food arrived in stages - too late usually.
I have been dining in Balfes for many years now and whilst the staff are always lovely and attentive, the food and menu can be hit and miss. They no longer have goats cheese or buttermilk onion rings on the menu and the steak was not as good as previously. There were hardly any chips served with our meal - mostly chip paper in the holder and the fish was not as fresh as we are used to. It was definitely a disappointing visit and I am not sure if we will return again as it was always our favourite restaurant.
Just to note we were charged 10euro for pate starter, but it was advertised on the menu as 7.50 We obviously didn't realise until after we left the restaurant Jennifer
Lovely restaurant with nice atmosphere
Lovely post Christmas lunch, we enjoyed food and atmosphere and the service was excellent.
Excellent breakfast in elegant surroundings. Thank you for taking care of us.
Food was amazing! As weird as this sounds, the bathrooms setup and cleanliness were top notch and greatly appreciated.
Food was fab and our waitress Andrea was wonderful very friendly and attentive we had family with us from Jersey Channel Islands and they were very impressed with the food and service will definitely be returning
Food was excellent, cooked to perfection and was very presentable. What really stood out was the warm welcome from Giovanni and his unwavering service throughout the evening. He was friendly, courteous and nothing was too much trouble.
Balfes has a lovely inviting atmosphere. We have had many great evenings here ,the staff are so friendly, attentive and accommadating. The food is delicious and just gets better. It's my go to in Dublin when I want to meet up with friends for a meal as I know it has both atmosphere and quality.
Server tapped my card on the payment machine without asking permission to do so. Small thing but generally it’s protocol to show the amount to the customer and ask if it’s ok the tap the card.
