With Parisian and New York influences, Balfes is an all-day dining brasserie and uptown bar in the heart of Dublin 2’s Creative Quarter. Located on Balfe Street, where Grafton Street and the Creative Quarter meet, Balfes features a 20 seater outdoor terrace, a zinc-covered bar and open kitchen and is open from 8am until late Monday to Friday and from 10am until late Saturday and Sunday.
The menu offers healthy breakfasts, leisurely lunches and dinner using the best of Irish seafood and quality meat, with all produce expertly sourced by our experienced chefs. Strong on Irish artisan ingredients including farmhouse cheese and house smoked salt, Balfes also has its own coffee blend, home-baked pastries, muffins and cakes, homemade preserves and chutneys and cold pressed juice, making it the perfect space for breakfast meetings with tempting treats.
Grilled steak, prawns and whole fish are roasted on a charcoal grill using grass-fed Irish beef, dry aged for 32 days, while fresh oysters, ceviche, seaweed cured Gravlax and Castletownbere crab make up the seafood offering. Fresh local produce goes into creating Balfes’ salads, weekend brunches, juices and cocktails.
Balfes caters for specific dietary requirements and offers plenty of gluten-free choices across the menu including gluten free omelettes, fish and chips, pancakes and offerings from the charcoal grill including the burger which can be served in a gluten free wrap. The menu also offers pilaf rice, a vegan rice option, and dairy free rice pudding.
Formerly Pitt Street, Balfe Street was renamed in honour of internationally celebrated composer, Michael William Balfe, who was born and spent his youth in a house on No. 10 Pitt Street. The musical tradition continues today, rebooted for the 21st century. Complimentary all-day WIFI makes Balfes the perfect place to work or meet.
It was a special birthday brunch for my 18 year old daughter and she was presented with a small cheese cake with happy birthday written in chocolate sauce on the plate, it was a really nice touch! Thank you.
Lovely staff and food was great. My riding companions all really enjoyed their food too.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch, right in the centre of town.
We enjoyed our meal on an outside table but the door continuously banged each time it was closed. Only one waiter realised that the door was banging and he held it each time he closed it. Well done. Everyone else just let it bang for the 2 hours we were there. What a relief it was when we left. Won't be back unless they sort the door out. Pity.
Loved the buzz here- went for pre- theatre menu which was great value and very tasty. I’ll definitely be back !
Great location, professional and friendly staff. Highly recommended.
Amazing attentive service as always.....
Food was really great, had great flavors and staff was very attentive. Really liked that it was quiet enough to hold a conversation, good atmosphere
Myself and my partner had dinner in Balfes in a Saturday night. We are both vegetarians and we were surprised at how limited the menu was for us. We had the vegan bulgar dish before and we found it to be bland. When we asked the waiter if there was any other options he suggested the fish which as vegetarians we obviously do not eat! I ordered the superfood salad and when I got it I was looking for the feta cheese and there was none in it. There was also no roasted beetroot as per menu. I felt that for €16.50 there would have been more in the salad I got. We ordered two sides with the main course and we had to ask the waiter where they were as they did not arrive. We were halfway through our dinner when we got them. We were very disappointed with our meal overall and we would not return if the menu remains the same.
Had brunch here with a friend. We had the pancakes and the avocado mash. The tea was lovely so we asked what the name of it was and they wrote it on a card for us which was helpful. I would definitely come back again.
Lovely lunch, had the seafood skillet which was yum!!!
Birthday celebration. The location, atmosphere and food was great. Service was ok, but have experienced much friendlier staff elsewhere.
Terribly expensive tea. Food is good and reasonably priced. Service not great. Two floor managers, one very pleasant. The other not very nice
Good service, good food, pleasant staff. Nice ambience
I brought 6 colleagues there for dinner last Thursday , they were so impressed. Food and atmosphere was brilliant. Thanks to all at Balfes
Being from New York, and having visited Paris many times over, I was eager to partake in Balfes culinary spin on both cities vis-à-vis, Dublin. The ambiance offered a quaint Parisian bistro bent, but true to many restaurants in NYC, the volume was deafening and the seating, at least in the far corner of the main dining room, where we were seated, offered minimal elbow room, akin to smaller Manhattan eateries. Perhaps solid acoustics and better arranged seating would help? Our server was top-notch, but unfortunately, the food was lacking. Perhaps fish & chips are better off left to the pubs; our servings were just okay, and the fish was underwhelming, the batter undercooked. With so many fine establishments available in Dublin, I'm not sure Balfes makes the cut. Then again, I wouldn't rule out brunch or lunch without first giving it a go. . .
Really enjoyed the restaurant , ambience and quality of food. Last but not least the menu was very good.
Lovely atmospher and food, great customer service by staff
1st time there would recommend staff very friendly and professional good fabulous
Great food and setting
Quality bar with great food, attentive service and the best Guinness in Dublin.
It was perfect. We got the table I requested & when we asked to stay longer it was absolutely no problem. It was my 2nd visit & won't be my last. Thanks to all
