Alongside is an exciting social space situated over the water in the stunning bay of islands. There is no place quite like it in Northland and we are proud to be different! While there is an overall laid back, casual feel to the huge decked area, its style and touch of class makes it the perfect place to get together with friends and family for a relaxed bite to eat and a drink to cool down in the beautiful winterless North.
Take in the breath taking views, relax on our comfortable loungers and soak in the great community feel that Paihia has on offer. Our goal is to cater to a wide variety of tastes and cultures while offering the best of what New Zealand has to offer with all day casual dining, you may find your afternoon slipping away as you sample some of our fine food and drink!
Our menus have been designed with inspiration from our stunning surroundings and are ideal for sharing - small plates and boards boasting local seafood and fresh produce. We open for breakfast from 8am, perfect for fueling up before your day ahead. Choose a drink to match from our extensive beverage list boasting a wide range of exciting wines to speciality rums and mouth-watering cocktails. We have one of the widest selection of rums in Northland, a perfect wind down after a day at sea!
Drinks: Around eight beers on tap Food: Starter was good (ciabatta with garlic butter). Fish had too much breading. Tiger Prawn pasta came with five prawns and the pasta had far too much sauce. Atmosphere: Be sure to dress warm (they do provide blankets though, which is nice).
Food was good. Missed having the gas heaters to help keep warm.
The atmosphere was great apart from the rain. I was given a blanket and we were offered to move to another table. Overall our dinning experience was great as we had never dined at Alongside before. Our meals were delicious and were well presented. Waiting time was only 30 minutes so we were very impressed with time and cost of our dinner. We plan to go back to Alongside again and book through First Table.
Awesome venue and atmosphere.
The weather was bad which made it hard for sitting outside
The manager was great and met every requirement we needed and the waiting staff and cooks did a fabulous job to get our food to us as quick as possible, and there were 11 of us. Great job and Great Staff. Thanks.
Amazing service and you made my partners birthday dinner extremely special, especially the birthday card from the entire team at alongside. Definitely will be back! Thank you!
Would not recommend OR return based on the experience we had on Saturday. One star is generous. Below average food and drink (I even returned 2 x flat cokes!) average service, small portions and a lot of items missing/out of stock items on your menu. We were so disappointed with our night at this restaurant as were our neighbours... you served a vegan a plate of potato skins with cheese!
Very disappointed. Took over 1 1/4 hours to get our food. Food was very minimal and unappetising. Very expensive for what it was, half the menu wasn’t available. Although the bar staff did deal with our complaint at the time very well.
Went there for lunch a few days ago and the location and service were great and the food was decent so we decided to head back for breakfast. Breakfast was an absolute disappointment. It cost $14 for a small waffle with a small amount of maple syrup and one banana on it. Bacon and yoghurt were extra also. My friend had a poached eggs on toast with a side of sausages and the servings were tiny without even a small butter to go with it. Portion sizes were terrible and overpriced. Not worth paying a fortune for average to poor food and terrible serving sizes.
Food was delicious but the service was average. We didn't get meal checked or asked if we wanted anymore drinks. We weren't served with water we had to ask for it. The waitress was told about an allergy of mine (lime cordial in my vodka soda) I asked for fresh lime or a fresh lemon and got served with lime cordial in my drink. Food is great and setting is beautiful it's just a shame the service is average it makes it not worth it.
This place is in prime location and could do really well. We came to celebrate and have dined before but the food wasn't great then. Decided to give it another go because things change and the location is awesome. Disappointed again. Frozen oysters!!! You pay more for them here then anywhere else in Paihia, yet they are frozen. They are also not served on an ice try just dumped onto a normal round white plate - not special at all. We complained and they removed it from the bill. Decided to try again with the chicken and this was better but I wonder if it was because we had complained the first time. We ended up leaving and having a 3 course dinner and cocktails over at Charlottes which is the place to be - they do good food and service very well. If you could replicate what they are doing you would be smashing it. Lift your game, you should be very embarrassed.
Really appreciated the birthday cake for my daughter! A nice touch
I'm not sure what the usual thing with Alongside is but we expected that our serveperson would have taken our drinks order at the same time as taking our food order. We had to go to the bar to order our drinks. The food took a very long time to arrive and when it did, one persons calamari was tepid and very chewy - (she didn't eat it and it was replaced) and the side order of nachos were stone cold and unedible - also replaced but still not hot and not very appetising. I ordered smoked salmon on ciabatta and expected slices of smoked salmon - not the mashed up salmon I did get (it could have come out of a tin for all it looked like) - perhaps that should be more clearly described. The final bill did reflect the poor food but I doubt we would risk coming back again
We booked for our Christmas Day lunch and were not disappointed. Excellent food and service from very friendly staff!
We visited "Alongside" on Christmas day after paying $80 to secure a table for a party of 4. We enjoyed some pre dinner drinks and decided on two course: entrees and mains. We mentioned to three different waitresses that we wished to have a break between our courses, but as soon as the plates were cleared the mains turned up. We again stated we did not want the main courses then and they agreed to take them back and redo them after 30-40 mins. However when they arrived the second time they were all cold. My wife and her friend had salmon and green beans and that is all it was, just a piece of salmon on some green beans, no sauce, no garnish, no imagination and all for $32. I and my friend had scotch fillet steak on Gnocchi and again no sauce, no garnish nothing for $35. We believe that they were the same meals that were dished up to us 40 mins prior, probably stuck in a warming drawer! Needless to say none of us ate it. When we complained all the restaurant manager did was to say he would pass our comments onto the "celebrity chef" and refund us our money. However we would rather have enjoyed our meals and paid for them then leave feeling hungry and disappointed. Based on this we would not recommend the restaurant and the "celebrity Chef" (whom maybe wasn't working that night) needs to put more effort into the design and preperation of the food and the menu. Having been in the hospitality industry myself for 25 years as a chef, a five year old child could have done better job. You cannot rest on the laurels of being in such beautiful surroundings, you have to back it up with a least some basic well presented food.
Food was great as previously experienced. Service was slow, however staff were friendly.
I’m afraid it was a forgettable meal, very poor meals badly presented. Steak was thin and over cooked, salad old and fish was dry. Cost was ridiculous for that sort of a meal. People at reception didn’t seem to care if offer to fix the problem.
Good service and overall good satisfaction
Your staff need to offer side plates and cutlery or serviettes with entrees. We had 2 that night and also shared one a few afternoons prior and all needed something but we had to ask for them. The dinner main meal was ordered twice and forgotten both times. It took 2 hours for us to get our dinner after the entrees. When it came out the steak was cold and not cooked correctly (ordered medium rare) and the seafood chowder, while it was very tasty, was more like a cheesy dip. We were very disappointed as this was our Xmas dinner and the only meal we are having out on this holiday. We will not be back.
king salmon and prawns are not nice at all.
30 minutes for a drink order (and food at the same time as it took so long). 30 minutes for drinks to arrive. Entrees arrived, half way through them asked if we wanted our mains...we said no. 5 minites later asked again. Mains then came as soon as entrees were removed and had obvisouly been sitting around as were cold. Once finished asked if we wanted deserts which we said no so then we were asked to go and pay at the bar to free up the table. Queued at the bar for 20 minutes to pay. Terrible all round im afraid as the setting/view is great. Was a bad way to end Christmas and wouldnt recommend!
Could not find our booking even tho I had reminder email! Slow service, had to be chased. Over priced, poor quality food.
Service and food quality was poor. The napkins were dirty, the portion size of salmon was so small, and the salad of beans was pathetic and tasted disgusting. Only positive was the southern fried chicken.
Slow service (although one staff member was really helpful). They didn't tell us what food on the menu they didn't have until I tried ordering it. The drinks order took nearly 20 minutes and the wine hadn't been chilled. Food was okay, but we expected better service overall.
