Stunning cliff-top casual dining overlooking tasman sea and the black sands Karioitahi beach
Enjoyed a lovely dinner and breakfast the following morning at Agave. Everything was top notch! All our food was amazing and cooked to perfection. We will be back!!!
Great place. Fantastic view. Everything is perfect. Strongly recommended.
Very nice food, well paced
Good food, great atmosphere. Will definitely come back
Great location and excellent food.
Would not recommend. Over priced and food was below average. Menu and restaurant could do with a major face lift.
Great views, excellent food and service. Definitely recommended.
Slow service, rude customer service
The location of this restaurant is just magic but the actual restaurant is tired and outdated. The outside area is beautiful but due to some of the large flaxes growing too high where we sat after eating you could not see the beautiful stunning view of the beach. The service was average and a little slow, took a while for drinks to arrive and ages for plates to be cleared away from the table. Food was ok - whitebait fritters tiny and quite expensive so I was still hungry after lunch. Chowder was very creamy and sickly and could have had more seafood. All meals were very pricey for what they were. This location could be made so much better with modernisation and making the most of the beautiful view. Platters would also be a great addition to the menu which would encourage diners to just sit and relax and take it all in as opposed to a silver service type dining that is not quite up to standard.
I’ll focus this in three separate parts Decor: old, tired, no regard for design or taste. Wasn’t extremely bad but it’s a beautiful spot so you can make it look 1000% times better by making a few inexpensive choices around design. Food: I can only comment on two items, seafood chowder and the beef. Seafood chowder: grill the bread on both sides it doesn’t take that much more effort. Other than that it was fine. If you want to be considered a fine dining restaurant, clean the mussels and leave them in their shell - it’s an asthetic thing. If you want it to tast anything but heated cream cook it with some great fish stock. Beef: what a clusterfuck. Firstly don’t serve a dripping bit of beef on top of a crispy rosti ( it defeats the point as mine was soggy) plating is bad. Get a long plate serve soggy bits on one side, others on the opposite. Mushroom sauce was wrong, did you blend boiled Portobellos?? Wrong. Cauliflower is asthetically wrong on a plate of ‘fine dining’ food. Try longer stemmed brocolli. Carrots where the best thing on the plate. Bacon was wrong. If you want it on the same plate put it in the rosti. Bacon and potatoes = greatness. Beef was cooked perfectly for my liking but the outsides tasted like bacon rather than beef, had to cut around. Service: we had a lovely server. I could tell she was self taught rather than properly trained. Ups to her. What a pity she was the only thing going for the place. Im an ex chef and foodie. People are always asking me where I eat because that’s all I do. Sadly I wouldn’t recommend your restaurant. I would love to, considering the amazing place it’s in. We ate, we didn’t complain because to be honest as an ex chef it really depends on whether the place strives to be better or just wants to remain the same. But you sent me an email so there’s my opinion because you asked for it.
The pan fried fish was described to be accompanied by seasonal vegetables. It arrived on a bed of grey brown gruel that Oliver Twist wouldn’t have asked for a first serving. It tasted as it looked. When asked about the seasonal vegetables, the answer was the two cherry tomatoes. To make matters worse this was part of a package so no compensation for the two $36 meals was available. The fish too was tasteless, very very disappointing and not to be recommended. For a birthday celebration get away, dissapointing.
Every item of food we ordered has serious culinary flaws that a home cook won’t make. Eg over cooked fish which was dry. No searing on the steak - too much gelatine on top layer of cheesecake. It was like rubber. None of the dishes came together with the match of flavours on the plate. Fish doesn’t work with lentils and prawns had no seasoning... worst meal I’ve in last 5 years
Great night and the staff were the best
Wonderful service and food. Very enjoyable dinner
Food was ok nothing wow especially the prices you pay, ran out of mozzarella so we couldn’t have that as an entree it was a bit disappointing as the restaurant wasn’t full.
Great service and amazing food! Such a lovely venue to sit and chat in relaxed atmosphere with beautiful outlook
My wife and I have dined here twice in the last 6 months and on both occasions the food has been superb. Every dish we've had has been a winner. Unfortunately last week there was no duck on the menu. My wife had the duck previously and it was absolutely delicious. Cooked to perfection. Hopefully it will make its way back on the menu when we return. Service is excellent - also noticeable on both occasions. We thoroughly recommend Agave and will definitely be back either for a romantic night or to share the experience with friends & family
Wonderful service and food and the view was amazing
Very helpfully and friendly staff
The staff we exceptionally lovely and caring!
Superb location Great food & service. Will definitely return.
Everything was great, we both really enjoyed our meals. My partner thought maybe the waitbait fritter had too many ingredients and would have been better more plain. I had the seafood chowder which was hands down the best I’ve ever had! I order it whenever it’s on the menu. Don’t change it ever!!! Staff were lovely, view was fab. We will be back
Excellent will be back again, soon
Great way to finish a massage beautiful spot on the West Cosst of NZ
We were so happy with everything. The service from the stuff was great & the food was so so good! Definitely coming back!
