Food very reasonably priced. Alcohol not so much.
Had my 21st birthday party in here. First of all the service wasn’t as expected and it felt like the venue was just not prepared for my booked party. Going into the venue there had been a previous gathering that finished at 6:50 and I was told I could go at 7pm but they weren’t ready for us. Finally getting upstairs to set up, there was no toilet rolls in any of the toilets upstairs. Moreover, the customer service was not as kind as I’d hoped. I had a girl get confused with a payment and tell me in front of my guests that I hadn’t paid the right amount (‘you’ve not given us enough money’). This would’ve been embarrassing for anyone. Whilst she was informing me of this she had her own phone and her calculator out to show me the calculations and then realised she was mistaken. Secondly, the bar staff had spoken to my DJ to say he was not aloud to play past 12am, however I had been told from the manager that my party was aloud between the hours of 7:30pm-1am, no more information towards the DJ having to stop had been given to me. Once speaking to the DJ about this he informed me he had also played other events till 1am at 172 at the Caird venue, which continued the confusion. Once I spoke to the members of staff at the bar they told me it was the drinks that stopped at 12am and the DJ could continue his work. However I was then further confronted by another bar staff member (as there was no manager I was told at this time of night), to then be told again further information that my DJ had to stop at 12am. So loosing out on money as I had paid him until the time I was told, 1am. This member of staff approached me after storming about swearing, ‘I’m fucking raging at this’ to his other colleagues whilst walking over to speak to myself and the DJ, this was just clearly unprofessional and not fair for him to do considering he confirmed my party hours were 7:30pm-1am but the DJ had to leave at 12am. I completely understand and respect they have licensing laws but why did I not get informed of this in the booking of my party so I was not loosing out on money for the DJ to stay till 1am. Later on in the night the bouncer came upstairs closer to the end of the night and was wandering in the function area for the last hour of my party. This is where I thought he was included in the service of the company and venue, so I politely requested for a guest to be removed from my party and he did not do anything. The person was then not removed and continued to get out of hand by lifting chairs above his head and throwing glasses. I was disappointed in this as I know the bouncers are with another company however I would have thought they would’ve helped out in this situation as they were wandering the function area as if they represented the venue as-well. Food&Drink: As stated above my party was 7:30pm-1am and I had booked this around March/April time. When asking for certain drink at the bar I was told they were not available due to low stock, which I then choose alternative drinks. 9pm came and many of my guests and myself had been told there was no Gin, bottles of corona and other sprits not available anymore, due to low stock. I think this was really surprising as it was was not expected for a venue, I understand their can be shortages etc but this was not acceptable for the amount people were paying for drinks such as; the glass bottles of coke for £4.50. My guests were happy to pay whatever but the fact their was not enough drink shows how unprepared this venue was for my party. Considering I booked in March for 100 guests and to run out of alcohol is unacceptable due to the party being planned well in advance. Moreover, their had been mention that the draft lemonade was running out resulting in people’s drinks tasting bizarre but the staff did fix this. However, a guest was waiting for her drinks when the bar staff did not clean out the measuring glasses at the bar, when my guest confronted this she was told they do rinse them out and showed her a demonstration of them tapping the measuring glass on a wet cloth. This would explain the confusion of the weird tasting drinks. The buffet was another issue that I had difficulties understanding, I had requested ‘simple sandwiches’ for instance plain cheese, ham, tuna and egg due to many children being in the venue and allergies. These sandwiches were not provided and they had there normal sandwich choices that suit the venues needs. The venues mugs also had to be used for the soup provided because the venue had no bowls available for us. We were also only limited to about 20 plates for the amount of guests and then given kitchen roll in replacement of napkins. Again if we were given the information there was a shortage of this then we would’ve prepared for this ourselves. Overall, I am very lucky to have a good set of family and friends who made my 21st birthday so special but taking that away I had a horrible experience with the staff and venue, which has led me to unfortunately not return to 172 at the caird. This is possibly along with a lot of my guests, so disappointed because it does have a lovely layout.
Lovely Afternoon Tea, would recommend.
Fantastic service and the cocktail class was very well run and the barman Robson was great.
Unfortunately a disappointing experience. Bruschetta for a starter was overpriced and must of taken all of a few minutes to prepare and fairly tasteless. Main courses of steak pie and chicken kebab arrived Luke warm and the again the chicken kebab was tasteless with no marinade used and dry. The environment and restaurant decor is lovely just such a shame that there is not the same quality and attention to detail applied to producing good food.
The cocktail class was brilliant fun, I will definitely recommend this for groups. My only constructive feedback is from the staff training & communication side of things. From booking the venue I’ve found it difficult to get in touch to ask questions or confirm details. I paid everything upfront yet still was handed the large bill at the end of the night, I also called to add on a gluten free order and passed this onto Claire (on the Tuesday prior to saturday) and it was not passed on to the kitchen on the day so I had to go through it again with the team. The food itself was excellent, everyone really enjoyed the meal. During the cocktail classes I was asked twice to collect some glasses and bring them back to the bar (sorry but I’m pretty sure this shouldn’t be the guests job to do) but I appreciate we were a bigger group. The staff on the bars downstairs seemed a little fed up and I had a few comments from our group about their attitudes. If the service levels improved slightly here and communication improved prior to event regarding dietary and payments then I would have had no issue scoring 5 stars for all categories.
Great day for mum 70th staff were very helpful, meals pre ordered and service prompt.
Food was lovely, cocktail making was amazing and Robson just made our night even more enjoyable
Lovely meal, attentive service but was slightly disappointed that the 2 for £10 cocktail offer no longer available. Still would highly recommend this place.
Booked a party of 30 for a works night out. Menu choices submitted earlier in the week. On the night staff looked after us very well, great night out great food. Thank you so much.
Your assistant manager Claire is a little pocket rocket who never stops.. great service as always
Food and drinks were lovely. Unfortunately after spending £600 we were informed our party were ‘too loud for the atmosphere’ and some of our party were refused service at the bar. As a group of professionals on a work day out this was extremely insulting considering some people had only had a couple of drinks. Mixed messages from bar staff and management worsened this problem. Such a shame as I am a regular customer and had recommended this to my colleagues who left feeling embarrassed and angry about the way they were treated.
Great food, very relaxed atmosphere and informal yet professional waiting staff. Enjoyable
Excellent meal, food was lovely and good choice for vegetarians. Great selection of drinks. Only slight hitch was that the £50 deposit that we paid a few weeks earlier wasn’t initially deducted from our bill. However this was rectified when we pointed it out. Staff were attentive and we appreciated the recommendation about the speakeasy bar below
Festive menu turkey escalopes were lovely but Christmas pudding was very dry and tasteless which was disappointing. We were sat on a table for two in the middle of the dining space where there were lots of empty tables not taken around the edge and at the window so we felt kind of ‘on display’. Also our bill had to be readjusted as we were charged for drinks which were not ours.
Went here with a few friends for a meal & drinks. The service was very good and friendly which was quick. The food was lovely and tasty and everyone enjoyed their meals. The drinks were of a good quality and choice. I would definitely go back.
Had our works Christmas night out here doing the cocktail class. We had a 2 course meal first which we all thought was brilliant. A glass of prosecco each waited for us when we arrived though to the cocktail class. We were then shown how to make 3 cocktails and had such fun making them ourselves. We were then given tapas. Bar man who was showing us was brilliant. There was 8 of us and everyone of us said what we had was definitely value for money. The staff were all polite and attentative. We could not have picked a better place to have our works night out. We all had so much fun would definitely do this again.
A lovely meal and start to the evening, however bar staff very inexperienced to cater for the party night on his own. Unfortunately the "party night" entertainment was extremely below par. "Ally Bally" as advertised turned out to be crude and offensive and a far cry from the radio entertainer as expected. Particularly with his foul language and derogatory comments. The night was cut short for our table due to the awkward nature of the DJ and the lack of atmosphere from other tables leaving. A good start however very disappointing as the night went on. Not at all the standard we expected for an evening at 172 The Caird.
Really good ! Accomadated kids with no problems. Pity about double booking up stairs but all went well.
Staff were very attentive however some were lacking in basic hospitality training. The man with the glasses wasn't very good at waiting tables. He was so impatient when we were trying to order from the wine list and didn't even take the list away after we had given our order. He was clearly more suited to working in a more casual dining atmosphere. No fresh napkin given for dessert too. We were also served by 4 different members of staff. And there was no toilet paper in the ladies. Overall good experience but twice it's been let down by chaotic waiting staff that need to attend a basic course in hospitality service.
Fantastic graduation celebration meal. Service was excellent. Can’t fault anything. It was a perfect afternoon & just what we wanted.
Had a lovley time,, warm welcome and very. Nice cocktails,on bar area, before, being shown to our table. Excellent !,
Food, service, value (with Itison) all excellent. Great menu choice and the cocktails are fabulous. I recommend the cheesecake cocktail. The restaurant lighting can be slightly gloomy at lunch time but in the evening it’s perfect.
we were at your cocktail making session on Friday night. all our company really enjoyed themselves. well worth the money thank you for a great night
Food was amazing and service was friendly.
