Stokey Veg Vegan is the epitome of “good things come in small packages”. The intimate restaurant is welcoming, with dark wooden tables, comfy leather seats and bright artwork covering the walls. The innovative and delicious food adds to the overall joy of being in there, and the staff were friendly and took time to explain everything on the menu.
Far from the vegan and veggie options of old, there isn’t a mushroom risotto in sight. Stokey Veg Vegan has created a menu that shows real passion for meat-free food. It is made for sharing, so there are small, medium and large plates.
It took us a while to choose between all the mouth-watering options, but opted for the mixed bruschetta topped with olive tapenade, artichoke and torpedino. It was the perfect starter — rich and delicious without being too much.
We then chose three of the larger plates to share. The porcini mushroom and potato chips on topinambur puree with crispy kale and mushroom demi-glaze was an amazing blend of flavour, with the crisp potato chips complimenting the artichoke puree perfectly.
Next we had the truffle agnolotti with eryngii mushroom chips, herb butter and a red wine reduction. As a truffle fiend, I could have eaten a whole vat of this dish. It was light (which is not what I expected from a plate with a red wine and truffle combination) and full of flavour.
For our final option, we chose the asparagus tempura, baby carrots and grilled tofu with cashew and corn sauce and fresh black truffle. I was excited about this one because it had so many elements, and I was definitely impressed. Each part of the dish was cooked to perfection. The tempura was delicious, with the asparagus covered in a light coating of batter and still with a satisfying crunch. The carrots along with the tofu and sauce worked so well together that they didn’t last long at all.
Not only did the food surpass our wildest taste dreams, the presentation was so stunning we almost didn’t want to ruin in by eating it.
The wine list is impressive and the staff will help pair a wine with what you are eating. But never one to pass up a cocktail, I opted for a berry daiquiri and my companion had a gin cup, which were so good we had to have seconds.
Stokey Veg Vegan is a breath of fresh air that pulls you in with its delicious, innovative food and keeps you in with the atmosphere and friendliness of the staff. I’d recommend getting there late afternoon and trying as many dishes as you can before you have to be rolled out the door. Also, if you’re looking for a date restaurant in London, this one’s a great match!
