Hanging out with kids can be loads of fun. It can also be a total nightmare when you’re trying to find a restaurant that will suit everyone. Go too high class and you’ll annoy other diners, choose to please the kids and you end up having a bad time. But stop worrying. We’ve put together a list of family restaurants in Wellington that will keep the whole fam smiling.

Buddha Stix

Sometimes all you need to do to keep the kids entertained when having dinner is take them to somewhere that looks cool. And Buddha Stix definitely ticks that box. It’s bright, it’s colourful and there are statues, lights, and gorgeous decorations everywhere. Their traditional Thai menu features classic dishes that the adults of the family will love, but also plenty of milder stuff for delicate palates. Try out the Vietnamese Laksa, the Massaman curry, or the pad thai; all surefire crowd pleasers.

Southern Cross

Situated in Te Aro, this gorgeous restaurant has been on the scene for over 100 years. It’s another one with the type of decor that will have the kids open-mouthed in awe; coloured lanterns, chandeliers, and comfy booths dominate this garden restaurant. Super family friendly, they have colouring and entertainment on hand, with a great kids’ menu on offer all day long. The little ones can tuck into bacon, eggs, and hash browns, burgers, or panko hot dogs, while the adults menu features steaks, mixed grills, and halloumi amongst other treats.

Whitby’s Restaurant and Bar

Part of the imposing Hotel Grand Chancellor, Whitby’s Restaurant and Bar has been a family favourite for a while now. Serving up both al acarte menus and a buffet option, your little delights can stuff their faces for just $18 at lunchtime. There’s something to suit everyone with sushi, seasonal salads, and options for veggies too. They even do a mean line in pavlova.

Unattended children will be given a shot of espresso and a puppy” the Ombra website exclaims, a welcome sight to people who are looking for a quiet family restaurant in Wellington. This Venetian-inspired bacara restaurant dishes up small plates that arrive the minute they’re ready. Selections of meatballs and pizzette (basically small pizza) will keep the children happy while the adults sip on Aperol Spritz and eat steaks, arancini, and pate.
