Dining out doesn’t have to break the bank! Despite what you may have been led to believe, Wellington is home to a wonderful array of inexpensive restaurants and cafes that will cater to your every culinary whim. And because we know these spots are rare, we’ve done the hard work  for you, and come up with five of our favourite cheap eats in Wellington. Be ready to have your mind blown - and not your budget!

Mr Go’s

It’s well known that Wellingtonians love Asian food and, alongside local food, it’s been one of the city’s favourite cuisines for generations. Today, there are hundreds of takeaways and Asian restaurants in town. So if you’re looking for a cheap (and good!) Asian eatery around, then you must try Mr Go’s. This modern Asian restaurant serves all types of delicious Asian dishes, such as Taiwanese steamed buns, bowls, fresh pieces of meats, and delicious baos. Their prices go from $9 to $20. They take bookings for groups of four, any less and you can just walk-in.


Teleport yourself straight to Venezia with this Italian inspired bacaro. The idea of Ombra is to serve modern Italian sharing plates as soon as they’re ready. Bring your friend, date, mom, or your entire office and enjoy all sorts of yummy treats at reasonable prices. . Expect traditional salads from $10 to $14, pizzas from $12 to $16, and dishes of polpette (meatballs) around $14. This spot is simply a joy, and you won’t want to disappear after receiving your bill.

Counter Culture

Counter Culture is Wellington's first dedicated board game cafe and bar. Isn’t it just the best concept ever? Whether you’re after the best in new board games or some old school classics, they’ve got you covered. With more than 500 games, this fun venue is great for all types of gamers, from casual players to seasoned strategists. They offer a wide selection of food for lunch, brunch, and dinner, as well as great coffee, wine cocktails, and beers at a very good price. And, to all the students out there: from Monday to Friday, you get a game pass + a lunch combo for only $10!

Spirit House

As the name implies, there’s more to Spirit House than great food and good  times. This Asian inspired restaurant serves food that is not only fresh but flavorful too. Expect spring rolls, dumplings, fried rice dishes, different curries, noodles, and a sharing menu. At Spirit House, you won’t be spending more than $22-23. This one’s a great venue  in town and one of our favourite cheap eats in Wellington!

Bistro 169

Located in the Mercure Wellington Abel Tasman Hotel in Wellington CBD, Bistro 169 is a great spot if you’re looking for a cheap eat in Wellington. Their lunch menu proposes exciting dishes with even more exciting prices. From winter roast vegetables and crispy beer battered fish & chips to chicken burger and braised beef brisket ravioli, you won’t be spending more than $20 here. These guys are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whether dining inside or on their outdoor patio or unwinding over a glass of wine in front of their fireplace, Bistro 169 is the greatest spot to chill and watch the world rush by while you relax.
