Breakfast is apparently the most important meal of the day but most of us don’t treat it with the respect it deserves. For those of us that can, weekends are reserved for luxurious morning meals (often with something stronger than coffee on the side) but for those of us that want to beat the crowds, we have a list of breakfast haunts open all week, perfect for a cheeky day off.

Buttermilk and Maple

With views over the river, prime people watching vantage points and banging brunch menu to boot, Buttermilk and Maple is more than restaurant. It’s light and airy at the front with huge windows and cost at the back with plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in if you’re feeling a little worse for wear. As their name suggests they take a great interest in breakfast, creating dishes that make even a cheeky Wednesday morning off feel like a special occasion. You can “Keep It Simple” with a smash avocado, poached eggs, dukkah and toast dish or go to town, with a plate of Lobster Benedict, grilled lobster on muffins with eggs and Bearnaise sauce.

1766 Bar & Kitchen

After years of renovations, The Old Vic has reopened with their fantastic new food menu serving breakfast to dinner. Not only do they serve an incredible range of pastries and Ahh Toots cakes alongside some lovely coffee, they also have a full breakfast menu serving classic favourites to the public and budding thespians. Take a seat in the window, people watch on King Street to your hearts content and work up and appetite whilst browsing their new menu. Tackle the Full O’Toole, their take on a Full English, or perhaps “The 1 Pan Cure”, a hunger and hangover buster filled with all the good stuff (bacon, sausage etc) topped with eggs, cheese and grilled. Bravo!

Broken Dock

If you like boats, the harbour, and a stonking morning feed, Broken Dock is the place to visit. Not only is getting there via the harbour path a glorious way to start you day, the food and morning cocktail options are quite the reward once you get there. The bacon is listed on the menu as “thick cut” and they’re not joking, the steak and eggs is a tasty protein hit, while those wanting to go a bit continental can enjoy a plate of cheeses, ham and sourdough. We urge you to order a Bloody Mary to pair with any of their breakfasts, it might not match entirely but it’s a great drink.

Ceres coffee

One of the the most beloved and well known brunch spots in Bristol, Ceres deserves its crown when it comes their impeccable food and relaxed atmosphere. Tables are communal, coffee is expertly poured and the menu is packed with dishes that are far more interesting than a bacon sandwich. We always grab a plate of “Square Mile” sweetcorn fritters, topped with egg, avocado and halloumi or their seasonal pancakes, light and fluffy and topped with whatever is in season. It’s always something fruity, crunchy and creamy so you’re never disappointed.

Bakers & Co

If you haven’t been to Bakers, you truly can’t claim to have “brunched in Bristol”. Not only are the smoothies fresh, the coffee smooth and the bread handmade and baked in store, the brunch options have something for everyone, encompassing the San Francisco vibe of the venue itself. Order the Full English and you are served a twist on the classic, duck egg, morcilla, slow cooked pinto beans and a mace spiced sausage all turn the dish into something exciting to eat. Don’t forget to grab one of their delightfully sticky buns on the way out for breakfast pudding.
