About Compasses Inn
Hidden above the Downs between Canterbury and Ashford in Kent, the Compasses Inn is a great Rural Country Pub find whether you are looking for a pitstop whilst cycling or walking, a relaxed lunch, a special evening meal, or a pint of fine Kentish ale.
Husband and wife team Rob & Donna Taylor are just into their third year at the Compasses and clearly have a great love for what they do - reflected in the pubs' appearance and the care and attention to every detail inside. They have a wealth of knowledge between them gained at some of the best restaurants and hotels in London and Australia
Robert says he feels lucky to own such a gorgeous pub in a very beautiful part of rural Kent. "As an area of Outstanding Natural beauty (AONB) we are surrounded by Game Estates, Rivers for Fishing, amazing Farmlands with Local Producers - and not to forget the stunning coastline within striking distance." With meats coming from as little as 1/4 mile down the road, and vegetables, herbs and fruits used from their own garden, they really have grasped the concept of fresh local produce.
Donna describes the Compasses as a "muddy wellies and fine food kind of place" adding that "we have not lost sight of the pub's history as a Fine Ale House, and we endeavour to complement this with a fine Modern British Menu offering both light lunches and full evening meals with traditional foods in contemporary style
The food and service at the compasses is always superb, we come back often due to this, sadly this visit was overshadowed by a loud party next to us, no fault obviously of the compasses.
Very interesting menu, more like a quality restaurant. Will beat your expectations. Warm welcome and friendly service all low key. Comfortable atmosphere. We are going back!
Lovely atmosphere,fine selection of food.
I can only give 5 stars on all accounts as that is my honest opinion of this lovely pub, with lovely staff, who served us delicious food and wine, everything we ate was delicious, there wasn't a scrap left on either of our plates, starters or mains, sadly neither of us had room for dessert, I would dine there regularly if we lived in the area
First visit, had a delicious lunch. Staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely pub in lovely countryside. Will be back for sure.
I heard about you from a Marina O'Loughlin article where she said that the Compasses reminded her of an early 'Sportsman' - praise indeed, but that is a wee bit up itself now. Anyway excellent ales, great selection from either set lunch or a la carte and very attentive service, would rather you remain a 'little secret' but that's not the point of running a business is it! Well done and keep it up. Chris and Jackie
really enjoyed our first visit to the compasses inn. Couple of points: the beef I ordered was a little too chewy .... which I did mention to the waitress after she had cleared away. I should have mentioned it before but hey ho. The main problem both my partner and I found were the portions were too small.... we left hungry. Nice food not enough of it.
lovely country pub in a beautiful off the beaten road location. Every course we had was delicious. Will definitely be returning
