About The Gate Restaurant Islington
Adrian and Michael Daniel have been running London’s most successful vegetarian restaurant since 1989 and opened their third restaurant, The Gate Seymour Place in December 2016.
"The food we serve is the food of our childhood, modulated by French and Italian influences. When we opened the Gate, we had had no formal training, we were just a couple of guys who knew what we liked to eat, but we knew that food was sacred and should be celebrated.
At the restaurant, we try to do just that: celebrate the food. This means, amongst other things, that we source our ingredients with care; we intensify flavour by careful cooking and by combining ingredients in unexpected ways. We try to make our dishes as visually pleasing as possible; and we try and do this in a fun and relaxed way.
We started with passion and creativity and we maintain that passion and creativity today."
Waited a long time for all varieties of everything. We booked the table so would have appreciated a better booking service that meant we weren't stuck in the middle of a heavy service. Our drinks arrived well after our starters. The food was fine but not worth the hype, money or wait. With so much great veggie food around these days, places that promise quality need to step up to the mark and prove it. With the big price tag for a veggie place, this should have been spectacular.
Amazing delicious vegan food. Highly recommended for all - including omnivores!
My wife and I have been vegetarians for 35+ years and have eaten all over the world. Food was bland, uninspiring and not fresh. Polenta chips were nice. House wine nice. There was a good buzz about the place but we were put at a table tucked away in a dark corner next to a dirty wall. Staff were friendly and efficient. Shame as we were looking forward to this. Please check out Dennis Cotter at Cafe Paradiso in Cork, Ireland for menu inspiration.
A lovely restaurant; with good, quality vegetarian food; lovely atmosphere and polite waiters providing a good service during the meal. **Unfortunately the when confirming our table booking to the front of house, my name was not computerised on the reservation list. Even though I did received an email confirming the table booking 24 hours before reservation. A computer glitch happened which tarnished the day.... It was my wife's birthday and I did request a service of providing a slice of cake with a candle to celebrate the day, which was not noted, as they could not find my reservation notes.** Apart from this constraint, the overall experience was very good.
Waiter was unenthusiastic, and unknowledgable, which detracted from the experience. We came from a long way to enjoy the experience of eating at your restaurant, and having pretensious, uninterested service at your prices put us off the place
We had a great meal
The food is excellent and I will return to try more of the menu. Service was slow and a bit flippant when we arrived and only improved when we got 's dedicated waitress. It certainly didn' t justify a 12.5% service charge added to the bill
Delicious food and rest service
