About The Ethicurean
We are connected to nature.
The Ethicurean restaurant, bar and kitchen focus on ingredients from the fields, forests, orchards, lakes & seas that surround our walled garden.
We shun industrially produced ingredients and rely on age old methods of preservation & fermentation to produce live and health giving food and drink often from within metres of the walls.
Culturally rich, lead by the seasons & tied to nature.
"The Ethicurean restaurant is set in the enchanting Barley Wood Walled Garden, a perfectly restored Victorian kitchen garden, bursting with fertile life. But far from your usual garden cafe fare, gardener Mark Cox sends his produce to the restaurant in the delightfully scuffed former glasshouse to be made by the team into some of the most delicious, innovative, vegetable-focused cuisine in the land."

We had a fantastic meal with a lovely waitress and a beautiful view. My main issue was that we were holidaying on a budget and had checked the sample menus online beforehand to make sure we could afford to eat at the restaurant. I realised that because of seasonality and cooking with what's available, these really are only samples so we weren't expecting identical or even similar dishes. However we were expecting similar price ranges (£10-15 and under for lunch dishes). When we arrived most of the lunch main courses were well over and around £20 or more. For some reason the menu also did not list *any prices* for the main courses or desserts. It only listed the prices for starters and for two or three course meals (so we were also confused about whether multiple courses were compulsory or not as they are at some restaurants). It actually became kind of stressful because we had no idea how much anything cost and if we could afford the place, and ended up having to ask the waitress about the prices and different courses. The food was delicious when it arrived and I can't fault the kitchen or the wait staff but I do think this is something the restaurant needs to sort out. I recommend that you have a more up-to-date menu (or at least with a more accurate idea of your pricing) on Open Menu, and I also strongly recommend you actually list the price for each dish as it's bizarre not to these days. Otherwise you risk making what should be a warm and welcoming experience into something exclusionary and snobby. I had the rarebit which was very good and came with an excellent salad. It could do with a slightly less hard-crusted bread (or a sharper knife) as I did find myself sawing at the edges a bit. My partner had the pork fillet and raved about it. It was nice but definitely expensive for lunch and more than we had budgeted for.
Wonderful food, setting and experience...
This place is such a treat! I fall in love with it every time we visit. Always look forward to see what's on the menu.
