About Five Bells
The Five Bells @ Colne Engaine
Proud Winners of BII Licensee of the Year 2011 and Great British Community Pub the Year 2011.
Welcome to the Five Bells Public House a pub and restaurant that stands proudly looking over the stunning view of the Colne Valley in the pretty village of Colne Engaine on the Essex & Suffolk border. The village is only 3 miles from Halstead, 6 miles from Sudbury and 10 miles from Colchester making it very accessible for dining out with friends, family & colleagues.
The building dates back over 500 years, and a record of the Inn's landlords going back to 1579 is proudly displayed in the bar along with other historic information about the pub & village.
The interior retains many of its lovely features such as the original exposed timbers in the restaurant and bar.
Outside, a lovely terrace commands stunning views over the Colne Valley. The restaurant, bar and terrace are all easily accessible via a ramp.
The menu is carefully created to include modern, exciting dishes along with delicious traditional pub food such as fish & chips and homemade pies. All our produce is sourced locally and from sustainable sources and prepared on the premises.
Owners Darran & Caroline Lingley are very proud to uphold the pub's long and fine tradition of hospitality, quality and service. Their friendly staff make all their guests feel very welcome.
The pub is delighted to sell an outstanding selection of Real Ales plus Adnams beers & spirits, Visor Belgium Beer and a wide selection of hand picked wines from around the globe to tantalise your palate!
We had a lovely meal and the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. It was nice we were able to have birthday balloons and our own cake. My parents who are not local are thinking of bringing a disabled friend as your disabled access is fantastic and they love be pub and the atmosphere. Thank you, we will be back.
The service, although extremely professional and friendly, was slow. This seemed to be due to poor staffing levels despite having a fully booked restaurant and a busy bar. Not the fault of the waiting staff, more of a poor management issue. The food was exceptionally good. We used the double up vouchers so were happy with the price paid but felt food was overpriced without them. Restaurant and all areas were clean and we'll designed. An enjoyable evening.
Incredible country pub with great atmosphere, superb service, fabulous food and cracking beer
Not my first visit but the standards of service was as good as before. Both staff and food excellent which made for a very pleasant family gathering.
It was a very busy evening and the service was slow but the waitresses were working very hard and as always excellent. However, the food was below par and very expensive. My partner had 10oz steak which appeared with approximately 10 chips and no salad or garnish-this was £22. My friend found a black hair in her food but our waitress apologised and we had coffee deducted from the bill. I started eating at the Five bells 12 years ago when it could be considered proper pub grub. Unfortunately, now the food is too upmarket, small portions and very expensive. I had a 3 course meal with wine at Rick Stein's restaurant in Porthleven for £55.00 for 2 peopleThis meal was 98.00 for 2 courses for 4 people. Darren, you need to review the type of food and prices. Won't be rushing back, sorry.
Whole thing was lovely, have already recommended to multiple people!
Brilliant meal, brilliant service, as always, great in every way apart from one thing, the creme brulee just wasn't quite up to scratch. Top was too thick, and inside was a little bland and almost scrambled egg like! Couldn't finish it unfortunately. Hate saying it as we love the pub and are in there regularly drinking. But honesty is of course the best policy!
